INVESTIGATION : POTENTIAL DIFFERENCE.

EXPERIMENT 1:
Do not use the emf of the cell because the internal resistance of the cell
has a significant role. Connect an AMMETER and a RESISTOR in series.
Use a VOLTMETER to measure the PD across the RESISTOR. Control the
current strength with an adjustable resistor.

EXPERIMENT 2:
Repeat the steps as in experiment 1, but adjust the resistance of the
rheostat.

EXPERIMENT 3:
Repeat the steps as in experiment 1 & 2, but adjust the resistance of the

QUESTION: (2)

TIP: A good investigative question refers to the dependent and independent variables. Remember to end the question with a question
mark. For example, the answer to an investigative question may not be just a mere "YES" or "NO".

HYPOTH
ESIS (2)

TIP: A good hypothesis refers to the dependent and independent variables. Your hypothesis should be an informed guess of what the answer
to your investigative question might be. The idea is to test your hypothesis through an investigation.

INVESTIGATION A (Experiment 1 to 3)
(1)

EXPERIMENT 1 EXPERIMENT 2 EXPERIMENT 3

V A V A V A

Calculate the resistance of the resistor used in EXPERIMENT 1 to 3.

(ROUND YOUR ANSWER OFF TO THE NEAREST WHOLE NUMBER)

(2)

Explain why the circuit MUST be switched off after every reading.

(1)

GRAPHIC REPRESENTATION OF THE DATA

Use the graph paper on the next page to present the relation between current against the potential
difference. Remember to adhere to all mathematical conventions.

INVESTIGATION : POTENTIAL DIFFERENCE ACROSS THE CONDUCTOR.

EXPERIMENT 4:
Do not use the emf of the cell because the internal resistance of the cell
has a significant role. Connect an AMMETER and a RESISTOR in series.
Use a VOLTMETER to measure the PD across the RESISTOR. Control the
current strength by changing the emf of the battery.

EXPERIMENT 5:
Repeat the steps as in experiment 4, but this time use a battery that
consists of THREE CELLS.

EXPERIMENT 6:
Repeat the steps as in experiment 4 & 5, but this time use a battery that
consists of FOUR CELLS.

GRAPHICAL PRESENTATION OF DATA

Use the graph paper on page 4 to present both resistors (the one used in INVESTIGATION A and
the one used in INVESTIGATION B) on the same axis system.

Remember to adhere to all mathematical conventions.

(6)

Explain why the gradients of the graphs of INVESTIGATION A (Experiment 1 to 3) and

INVESTIGATION B (Experiment 4 to 6) differ from each other.

(1)

During INVESTIGATION C a learner connect the two resistors, that was used during this practical
investigation, in the same circuit with a voltmeter ACROSS the resistor combination. He draws the
graph on the same axis system and find that the gradient of the line of INVESTIGATION C is the
smallest of all three graphs.

Are the resisters connected in SERIES or in PARALLEL? Give a reason for your answer.
