PDM Functionalities

Versioning of product

Design for Environment

Virtual Testing and Validation
Strategies of Experience Curve

Bhaskaruni Vasumati
1NH20CS048
Introduction
• PDM systems manage and control product data throughout its
lifecycle. They organize, centralize, and secure product
information, enabling efficient retrieval, modification, and
sharing among stakeholders.
• Version control within PLM ensures that different iterations or
versions of a product are systematically managed and tracked.
• The design of physical and digital environments in PLM
significantly influences collaboration, innovation, and
productivity.
• Virtual testing and validation simulate real-world scenarios,
allowing for analysis and assessment of product performance
without physical prototypes.
• Adopting virtual learning strategies within PLM enables
continuous skill development, knowledge sharing, and training in
a digital environment.

PDM Functionalities
User Functions
1)Data vault and document management
• PDM systems utilize central repositories, known as data vaults, to
manage various forms of product information. These vaults can be
physical file system locations (such as folders or directories) or
databases, ensuring data access control, security, and integrity.

• Learning and communicating a data vault PDM can be done by

looking at real-world examples. For instance, TTK Prestige used
data vault to integrate data from multiple sources and capture the
customer journey.

• For example, a data vault PDM uses hash keys as primary keys,
prefixes tables with H_, L_, or S_ depending on their role, and
applies load dates and record sources to track data lineage and
history

• Product data generated by various applications, such as

specifications, CAD models, computer-aided engineering (CAE)
data and software executables. This information is stored in the
file system or in a database.

• Check-in and check-out functions provide secure storage and

access control to data stored in the data vaults.

• When a PDM system is deployed in an organization or in a project,

the system administrator must define how the data vaults are to
When the user checks out a document, it will be under PDM
control in a work location.

• The document may be changed several times before it will be

checked in again into another data vault, the work in process
(WIP) vault.

• All the members of the project team are provided with access to
the WIP vault for viewing or altering the information it contains.

• When the document has passed the approval process, it will be

submitted and stored in the release vault, a file location where
users have only read access.

• The approval process automatically stores information in the

release vault to which only the PDM system (a very specific user
with system authorities) has write access.

2)Workflow and process management

• It includes defining the steps in the process, the rules and activities
associated with the steps, the rules for approval of each step, and the
assignment of users to provide approval support.
• PDM workflow management provides the mechanisms for modeling
and managing defined processes automatically. Data can be submitted
to the appropriate workflow for processing.
• All documents in which work is in progress are stored in the WIP vault.
A work order is sent to the designer when review is necessary. The
designer sends the document to designated users for reviewing. The
change review board will take care of the comments.
• When the document is approved, it will be stored in the release vault.
Upon approval, the new and modified documents and all data are sent
from the WIP to a release vault and the item now revised becomes
generally available.

• After the work is completed, the newly revised items continue to refer
to the work instructions and work orders by which they were
generated.
• This provides a valuable history of the evolution of the design, which
allows users to learn from design approaches that have been
implemented in the past.
• In TTK Prestige, examining the implementation of streamlined
customer service processes, it also shows how the employees are
involved in the process management.
• The workflow can transfer the data to nominated users, groups, or
project roles to carry out a specific business process. Appropriate
information is routed automatically. At any location, the data can be
assessed as it progresses through its life cycle.
• Thus, workflow management is a critical part in the product definition
life cycle to ensure that the right information is available to the correct
users at the proper time.
3)Product Structure Management
• When designing a complex product, the management of its component
parts is as important as the management of the documents that
describe the product.
• A product structure most often forms a hierarchical structure. A
product structure is a division of parts into a hierarchy of assemblies
and components.
• It involves identification and control of product configurations,
management of the development and selection of product variants,
including platforms, options, alternates, and substitutes, linking of
product definition data to the structure, transfer of product structure
and other data in both directions
• In an enterprise, product structures are used in different procedures,
which can have different requirements for the breakdown and
information content of a product structure.
• For example, the pressure cooker contains the cooker body, seating
ring, vent pipe, cover which constitutes the components.
4)Classification Management
• Classification management is the classification of standard
components in a uniform way. To support reuse of standard
components, the components are classified and information about
them is stored in the PDM system as common attributes
• Effective classification management in PLM enables organizations like
manufacturing companies, such as TTK Prestige, to efficiently manage
and leverage product information, streamline processes, improve
decision-making.
• To ensure that a new product reaches the market in the shortest
possible time, the reuse of parts of products is essential. Reuse is
supported by the possibility of classifying components and attaching
attributes to them.
• Classification provides a structured and standardized taxonomy that
categorizes and organizes product data consistently throughout the
organization as per defined standards.
5)Program Management
• The support for project management provided by a PDM system
involves standard functions such as definition of work breakdown
structures (WBS), resource allocation, and project tracking.
• The purpose of this kind of functionality in a PDM system is that it
enables the relation of the project data to the product data.
• This makes it possible to see with which parts of a product a specific
project is working and the extent to which resources have been
expended on this part of the product.
• Program Planning provides a top-down approach to plan and
execute programs or projects in an integrated PLM environment.
• Most PDM systems are integrated with specialized project
management tools. Effective support for project management is then
provided with the possibility of relating product and project data with
each other.

Utility Functions
1)Communication and notifications
• As part of the implementation of workflow support, notifications can
be automatically sent to the users. A notification can be sent to make a
user aware of a specific operation or when a specific state has been
reached.
• The systems could include SMS alerts, push notifications via mobile
apps, or automated calls in case of emergencies or time-sensitive
information.
• TTK Prestige likely uses email for official communication, including
announcements, updates, and internal memos.
• They may organize regular team meetings, departmental meetings, or
town hall sessions to communicate updates, strategies, and important
information to employees.
2)Data transport and translation
• PDM stores and manages data produced by many different
applications. This information is often retrieved for reading or
changing in the same application, but there may be a need to read the
data in another application.
• In a PDM system, predefined translators can be used for converting
data from one application for use in another and for displaying
information.
• The system administrator sets up the translators and the users
therefore do not need to know which data translators to apply.
• TTK Prestige utilizes ETL tools to streamline data transport and ensure
data compatibility between different systems.
3)Image Service
• Visualization tools support collaborative work by making it possible for
all users to view images. Images can be stored and accessed as any
other data in the PDM systems or in, for example, CAD systems.
• TTK Prestige might use DAM services within their PLM to efficiently
store, categorize, and retrieve product-related images and visuals.
4)Administration
• They use third-party PLM software, administrators may manage
relationships with PLM software vendors, including contract
negotiations, support requests, and staying updated on new releases
or features.
• The system administration functions include installation and
maintenance, role management, workflow definition, operational
parameters, system performance monitoring, database and network
configuration, access and change permissions, user authorizations,
setting up new projects and authorization of project team members,
approval procedures, data backup and security, database migrations to
later versions, customization, and data archival.
• These systems can be customized in many ways: matching business
needs, tailoring the user interface to satisfy needs, integrating third-
party applications, adding new functionality, changing terminology,
tailoring system information messages, and extending the standard
data model to include company-specific data types.
• Role management includes such functions as setting up user accounts,
groups, access rights, and security levels and the maintenance of all
users and corresponding roles and groups.
5)Application Integration
• Integration with authoring, visualization, and other collaborative tools
is important to establish a single source of product data.
• Integration with text editors includes the addition of such functions as
check in and check out of documents to and from the text editor.
• In this company, ERP systems enables the synchronization of product
data, such as bills of materials (BOMs) and direct exchange of design
data, models, and drawings using CAD tools.

Versioning of product
• Product versioning is a technique to track and manage the changes
that occur while managing product lifecycles. It is the creation and
management of multiple product sets, all of which have the same
general function but are modified, improved, upgraded, or customized.
• Product versions are minor updates made to an existing or released
product without changing the key components of a product.
Why is it important?
• Versioning allows for the systematic tracking of changes,
enhancements, and modifications made to a product over time.
• It facilitates transparent communication among teams, stakeholders,
and customers regarding updates and changes introduced in each
version.
• It also aids in providing targeted support and maintenance.
Benefits of Versioning
• Enhance product traceability: By tracking each change made in the
product with newly created versions, the engineering and
manufacturing teams know the changes made to the product.
• Identify the impact on processes: Product version management helps
you identify whether and how the changes will impact different
product lifecycle processes.
• Add improvements easily: In case of any damaged or faulty product
release, instead of recalling the product and releasing a new one
altogether, manufacturers can easily update the product by creating a
‘new and improved version.’
• Minimize manual effort: It enhances your ability to manage the
development of product releases by providing a consolidated history of
product release changes, reducing the manual effort of product
releases.
Product Versioning in TTK Prestige
 Versioning in TTK Prestige products usually includes giving distinct
names or numbers to different versions or models of their products.
For instance, you might find products named with a series number
(e.g., "Prestige Deluxe," "Prestige Deluxe Alpha," etc.)
 For example, they might release an upgraded model with added
functionalities, enhanced durability, improved energy efficiency, or
aesthetic changes.
 Each product version might be accompanied by release notes or
documentation outlining the changes, improvements, bug fixes, and
new features introduced in that version.
 This could include a numerical versioning system (e.g., v1.0, v2.0) or an
alphanumeric code to distinguish between different product versions.
Design for environment
• Design for Environment refers to a concept focused on creating
products and processes that minimize environmental impact
throughout their lifecycle.
• The first objective is to deal with disposal and recycling in the
design process. The second objective is to examine the
manufacturing process for producing the product and substitute
methods, power sources, chemicals, and solvents that are
environmentally unfriendly with ones that are less so.
• Choosing environmentally friendly materials, such as recyclable
or biodegradable materials, reduces the environmental footprint
of products. TTK Prestige prioritizes materials that have minimal
impact during extraction, production, use, and disposal phases.
• Choosing environmentally friendly materials, such as recyclable
or biodegradable materials, reduces the environmental footprint
of products. TTK Prestige might prioritize materials that have
minimal impact during extraction, production, use, and disposal
phases.
• Eco cookware is induction suitable, oven and dishwasher safe for
added convenience.
• With 5 layers of extra durable plant-based non-stick, reinforced

even heat distribution
• All of this is PFOA-free and palm oil-free, so many plant-based
items turn out to use the cheap, environmentally harmful
ingredient.

Virtual testing and validation

• Virtual testing and validation refer to the process of evaluating,
assessing, and confirming the performance, functionality, and
safety of products or systems using digital simulations, models,
or computer-based techniques, rather than physical prototypes
or real-world testing.
• FEA is a computational technique used to simulate how a
product or component will react to real-world forces, vibrations,
and thermal effects. TTK Prestige uses FEA to analyze the
structural integrity of their kitchen appliances, ensuring they
meet safety and performance standards.
• CFD simulations can be employed to analyze fluid flow, heat
transfer, and airflow patterns within appliances like gas stoves,
pressure cookers, or ovens. This helps optimize designs for
efficient heat distribution, combustion, or cooling.
• Simulating thermal behavior and heat distribution within
appliances to ensure that temperature regulation and heat
transfer are optimal for safe and efficient operation.

Strategies of Experience Curve
