4a) For a continuous and oriented fibre reinforced composite, the moduli of elasticity in the 3
longitudinal and transverse directions are 43.1 GPa and 5.66 Gpa respectively. If the
volume fraction of fibre is 0.40, determine the moduli of elasticity of fibre and matrix
phases.
4b) A composite material is made by using 10% by volume of Kevlar fibre and 90% Epoxy 3
matrix. If the elastic moduli of Kevlar is 130 GN/m2 and epoxy is 4 GN/m2, calculate the,
a) Youngs modulus of the composite material in the fibre direction.
b) Youngs modulus of the composite materials in the transverse direction.
c) Fraction of load carried by the fibre.
