AIRCRAFT PROPULSION-(MME 268)

1. a. What makes it necessary for the use of turbo-prop engine in aircraft propulsion
as compared with a piston-prop engine? Describe with component sketches/
drawing the purpose of each part in details? (6)
b. How is forward motion of an aircraft achieved by propeller action? How does the
aircraft lift-off the ground? (4)
2. a. Explain the effect of impeller blade shape on the performance of centrifugal compressor.

b. A single stage turbo blower compresses 1000 m3/min of air at 1 bar and 15°c through
a pressure ratio of 1.33 with an index of compression as 1.6, assuming the power input to
the blower to be 800 KW and Cp= 1.005, calculate the isentropic efficiency of the
blower. Assume R= 287 J/Kg K. (4)
c. Draw the velocity diagram for forward impeller vanes? (2)
3. a. Explain the following Co-efficient of performance with respect to axial flow
compressor (6)

iii. Work Co-efficient
b. Explain the relative merits and demerits of centrifugal compressor and axial flow
compressor of a gas turbine engine? (4)

b. Explain the type of combustion chamber which are suitable for low mass
flow rate engine? Write advantages and disadvantages also? (6)
5. a. Explain the types of Supersonic inlets with suitable diagram? (6)
b. Explain the area ratio and mach number relation of the constant C-D inlet with
suitable diagrams? (4)
