Chung Mong-Hong’s two and half hour long Taiwanese crime drama ‘A SUN’
is nothing short of a painful yet decidedly hopeful, epic.Despite the fact that
this engrossing film was released four years ago , I only recently found out
about it .
This family saga is set in Taiwan and follows a struggling family as it crumbles
under the pressure of unfulfilled expectations ,unwavering pride and
unforeseen tragedy. The opening scene is set in a restaurant where A-ho is the
accomplice of a mad dog pal called Radish (Liu Kuan-ting), who chops off a
rival’s hand in a restaurant. Later in the film,Radish does everything in power
to make our main character,A-Ho(Wu Chien-ho) life a living hell. The rest of ‘A
Sun’ depicts the events that occur after this crime and shifting relationship
between A-Ho and his family.
Although A-Ho is impulsive and keeps making some bad and life-alerting
mistakes,he is not a bad person and I was rooting for him the entire
time.Futhermore, his mischievous character is a consequence of his jealousy he
feels toward his brother,A-Hao(Greg Hsu)and the distant relationship with his
father,A-Wen(Chen Yi-wen). The father’scoldness and lack of remorse for our
main character is painful to watch. The story is entirely credible and
emotionally intense and this is thanks to the amazing cast, who did they best.
This film is visually stunning but nonetheless the highlight of ‘A Sun’ is the
message of forgiveness and reconciliation, which makes it more resonant to me
and the audience.

Chung’s ‘A Sun’ is unquestionably one of the best films I have ever seen in
my life.I highly recommend the film,’A Sun’ because it will make you
cry, ponder, fear and smile throughout. If you love a heart-wrenching ,
unpredictable and hopeful family story this film is your cup of tea.
