TOPIC DEMOCRACY AND HUMAN RIGHTS

SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

PURPOSE Investigate the human rights violation that has taken place in your
community

ASSESSMENT Activities 1 – 6 expects learners to display knowledge, skills, values and


other related competencies necessary to be demonstrated. The project
requires extended reading and writing on the part of the learner.
Furthermore, the project will require thorough investigation and sourcing
of information on human rights violations.

All assessment criteria applicable to the project must be discussed with


the learners prior to the commencement of the project.

DURATION 3 Weeks ( 06 May- 24 May 2024)


Although learners will spend time outside of contact time to collect
resources and information, the completion of the task must be facilitated by
the teacher during class time. Adequate guidance is due at the outset of the
project and progress should be monitored throughout.

INSTRUCTIONS TO LEARNERS

1. Your project must have a cover page, table of content and bibliography
2. Read instructions of every question carefully.
3. Your answers can be typed or hand written.
4. The mark allocation guides you on the length of your answer
5. Acknowledge all sources consulted in the form of bibliography.
6. Your project must be bound or stapled

● Conduct research by consulting 5 sources or more.


● Your focus must remain on the chosen topic throughout the task. Your research should
be presented in an Essay format and should focus on the human rights violation.
● Choose one of the following topics:

Activity 2: Data gathering through Questionnaires

Distribute the questionnaires to 6 learners at your school to gather their knowledge on


human rights violations.
Use the attached questionnaire as a possible guide to help you.
Interview/ Reports/ Information questions: Learners to use the following questions -
2.1. Please explain to me your own understanding of human rights.
2.2. Briefly share with me the human rights violations you have seen happening in your community.
2.3. Which laws do you think can protect citizens from human rights violations?
2.4. How can you rate the extent to which the government is making sure that the human rights
are protected?
2.5. To which department/organisation do you think the human rights violations victims could get
help?

Note: Use 6 separate questionnaires for each respondent. The 6 completed questionnaires must
be attached to the final product – project

Your teacher will make enough copies for your 6 respondents


Assess the data you received from the six learners/respondents/participants by conducting an
analysis of the responses (data) that you gathered for each of the questions above.

3.1. Discuss TWO contributing factors that led to the human rights violation of your

support your answer.

Activity 4: Human Rights and the Media

4.1 Find 5 pictures on the chosen topic and make a collage. Study the pictures
and answer the questions below:
Critically evaluate the impact social media reports on poor or no service
delivery. Illustrate your responses by giving examples from your collage.

4.2 Assess how the media is supposed to exercise its roles and responsibilities in
reporting human rights violations in a responsible manner in a democratic
