Which Method Would You Use?

The following are examples of research methods used by psychologists: case histories, naturalistic
observation, laboratory observation, surveys, tests, correlational studies, and experiments. For each situation,
decide which method is appropriate and briefly describe why.

1. Determining the favorite food of adolescents

Method: Survey
Explanation:

5 variables were proposed to determine the favorite

food of 25 adolescents. These variables were:
hamburger, pizza, fruit salad and spaghetti.
Therefore, the results showed that 45 % of adolescents
prefer the hamburger as their favorite food.

2. Determining whether a person is introverted or extroverted.

Method: Test

Explanation:

To establish if a person is introverted or extroverted was made a test, whereby five questions were asked. These
questions were 1. Do you like speaking in front of people? 2. Do you have many friends? 3. When you arrive at a new
place where you don't know any people, are you the first to speak? 4. Do you like being the center of attraction? 5.
Do you feel comfortable when you are in a place with a lot of people? and the answers were YES or No. As a result,
in the whole questions the person marked No and thus, it determined that the person is a introverted person.

3. Determining if frustration causes aggression.

Method:Laboratory Observation
Explanation:
Participants were asked to complete an unsolvable
puzzle-solving task, and then their behavior was
observed, whether or not it was aggressive toward an
object or another person. As a result, participants who
experienced frustration when trying to solve the
unsolvable puzzles showed an increase in aggressive
behaviors toward objects or people compared to those
who did not experience frustration,

4. Determining if level of education is associated with crime.

Method: Correlational studies
Explanation:

To collect data it was necessary a survey, which was applied to 50 people

of Bogota city. In the results, the correlational coefficient showed that
there exists a negative correlation between the two variables: level of
education and crime. Thus, if the level of education is higher, the crime
decreases.

5. Determining how teenagers behave on their first date.

Method: naturalistic observation

Explanation:

It developed a naturalistic observation where 15 students were set a date in a classroom to determine how they behave
on their first date. The result generated was that three students keeped silent with the rest of them, seven students
created a group which wanted to be the superiors of the rest of 15 students; and the last five students tried to interact
with the whole group in order to be integrated with the group.

6. Determining the behavior of subjects who are anxious about participating in research.
Method:Experiment
Explanation: In an experimental setting, researchers can manipulate variables related to anxiety, such as the nature of
the task or the environment, and observe how subjects respond. They can measure indicators of anxiety, such as heart
rate or cortisol levels, as well as behavioral responses, such as avoidance behaviors or verbal expressions of anxiety.
