PCA-Ethical Communities Worksheet

Worksheet Objectives:
1. Understand the four ethical communities
2. Apply an ethical community to your personal case situation

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Briefly restate your situation from Module 1 and your role.

Role
As a plumbing assistant within the organization ( Samana Home Builders ), my role was
instrumental in ensuring that the plumbing aspects of each home construction project
were executed with precision and expertise. From assisting senior plumbers in
installations to troubleshooting issues and ensuring that everything is done correctly, my
responsibilities were varied and crucial to the success of our endeavors.
Situation
Throughout the project, effective communication and teamwork were paramount.
Collaborating closely with other departments and external stakeholders, we navigated the
obstacles with resilience and determination. Despite the setbacks, our collective efforts
ensured that the construction project was completed on schedule, meeting the high
standards expected by our clients. This experience underscored the importance of
adaptability, collaboration, and resilience in the face of unforeseen challenges in the
construction industry, reaffirming Samana Home Builders' commitment to excellence in
every aspect of our work.

2) Describe how the ethics of the organization influenced the situation.

The ethics of Samana Home Builders played a crucial role in shaping the situation
described. The organization's commitment to ethical conduct and integrity influenced
decision-making processes, guided interactions with stakeholders, and informed our
approach to problem-solving. Upholding ethical standards ensured that our actions were
aligned with the values of honesty, fairness, and accountability, contributing to the trust
and confidence of our clients and the community at large.

3) Recommend how you would apply one of the ethical community metaphors (see
Exhibit 20.1 in Bolman and Deal) for an alternative course of action regarding your
case.
Applying the ethical community metaphor of "the moral compass" from Bolman and
Deal's framework, I would emphasize the importance of ethical leadership and collective
responsibility in guiding our actions and decisions. By fostering a culture where ethical
considerations are central to our organizational identity, we can create a shared
understanding of right and wrong, inspiring individuals to act in accordance with our
ethical principles. This metaphor encourages us to view ethics not as a set of rules to be
followed but as a guiding force that shapes our behavior and relationships within the
organization and the broader community.

4) Reflect on what you would do or not do differently given what you have learned
about ethics.
Reflecting on ethics, I recognize the importance of integrating ethical considerations into
every aspect of our work. In the future, I would strive to proactively identify ethical
dilemmas and seek input from stakeholders to ensure that our decisions align with our
ethical values. Additionally, I would advocate for ongoing ethics training and discussions
within the organization to promote awareness and understanding of ethical issues and
their implications. By fostering a culture of ethical leadership and collective
responsibility, we can uphold the integrity of our organization and build trust with our
stakeholders, ultimately contributing to our long-term success and sustainability.
