History

🞄 Basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith in 1891 in Springfield,


Massachusetts.
🞄 Dr. Naismith was a college professor who wanted to create a game that his
physical education classes could play inside during the long winters.
🞄 The first games used peach baskets nailed to the wall for rims. The first ball
used was a soccer ball.
1894 – Soccer ball was replace by a ball made by spalding
🞄 Number of players depends on the court size, until 1895
• Original points per basket is 3, until 1895
• 1903 – it was ruled out to put a straight boundary lines
• 1906 – Nets open at the bottom and backboard were adopted
• 1932 – A line was drawn at midcourt and the offensive team
was required to advance the ball within 10 seconds
🞄 August 3,1949 – NBA was created
• 1979 – a 3-point line was implemented in NBA
• Interest in the game deepened as a result of
television exposure, but with the advent of
cable television, especially during the 1980s,
the game’s popularity exploded at all levels.
Given a timely mix of spectacular players—
such as Earvin (“Magic”) Johnson, Julius Erving
(“Dr.J”), Larry Bird, and Michael Jordan—and
the greatly increased exposure, basketball
moved quickly to the forefront of the American
sporting scene, alongside such traditional
leaders as baseball and football.
Terminologies

Airball:
A shot at the basket that misses everything
Alley-Hoop:
When one player jumps and catches a pass from another player and
simultaneously dunks the ball or shoots it in before landing..
And One:
When a player gets fouled while shooting and the ball goes in. The
player then gets one free throw.
Terminologies
Assist:
A statistic that occurs when a player passes the ball to someone who
scores after receiving the pass. The passing player earns an assist in
the stat sheet.
Block (action):
A statistic that occurs when a defensive player stops an offensive
player from making a shot by blocking the ball with his or her hand(s).
Carry:
This penalty, which results in a turnover, occurs when a player holds
the ball excessively at the apex while dribbling.
Terminologies
Charge:
This penalty, which results in a turnover, occurs when an offensive
player with the ball runs into a stationary defensive player and knocks
him or her over.
Dribble:
Process by which a player repeatedly bounces the ball off the floor
Double Dribble:
This penalty, which results in a turnover, occurs when a player dribbles
the ball with both hands. It also occurs when a player dribbles, stops
dribbling, and then begins
Terminologies
Flop:
When a player attempts to draw a foul on an opposing player by
acting, fabricating or over-exaggerating the extent of contact.
Free Throw:
A free shot given to a player after a foul or a technical foul.
Foul:
A violation resulting from illegal contact with an opposing player. Foul
line: See “Free-throw line.”
Terminologies
Free-throw lane:
Also called the “key” or “lane;” a 12-foot wide area extending from
the baseline to the free-throw line. Players may not be in this area
during a free-throw attempt.
Full–court press:
A defensive tactic in which a team guards the opponents closely the
full length of the court.
Held ball:
Formerly called a “jump ball.” When two players on opposite teams are
in joint control of the ball.
Terminologies
Jump shot:
A shot that is released after the shooter has jumped into the air.
Lay-Up:
A shot taken close to the hoop, usually when a player is moving
toward the basket.
Overhead pass:
A two-handed pass thrown from above the forehead.
Overhead pass:
A violation in which an offensive player remains within the key
(free-throwlane)
Playing Regulations
🞄 The game shall consist of 4 periods of 10 minutes. ( 10:02:10:15:10:02:10)
🞄 There shall be intervals of play of 2 minutes between the 1st and 2nd period
(First Half), between the 3rd and 4th period (Second Half) and before extra
period .
🞄 There shall be a half time interval of play of 15 minutes.
🞄 Status of the ball :- live and dead
🞄 Jump ball and alternating possession.
🞄 Goal :- when made and its value

🞄 Player out of bounds and ball

A foul is an infraction of the rules concerning illegal personal contact with
an opponent and unsportsmanlike behavior.

shooting.
