TUTORIAL SESSION 8 (12/04/2024)

Question 1

Ethylene at 167 °C and 7 bar is being processed, and the following virial coefficients
were reported:
B = -54.8 cm3/mol C = 4 120 cm6/mol2

Estimate the molar volume and the compressibility factor for ethylene under these
conditions by the:
a) Ideal gas equation.
b) The virial equation of state truncated to second virial coefficient.
c) The virial equation of state truncated to third virial coefficient.

Question 2

Determine the molar volume and compressibility factor for o-xylene at 650 K and 35
bar assuming that the compound is a:
a) Van der Waals fluid.
b) Peng-Robinson fluid. (Homework)
c) Redlich-Kwong fluid. (Homework)
d) Soave-Redlich-Kwong fluid. (Homework)

Question 3

Determine the molar volume of propane at 360 K and 20 bar by each of the following
approaches:
a) The ideal gas equation
b) The Pitzer generalized compressibility-factor correlation.
c) Pitzer correlation truncated to second virial coefficient.
d) Pitzer correlation truncated to third virial coefficient. (Homework)
