Task 1

Study the structure and the content of the AVT translator's competence (PPP "Competence in
AVT" slides 1-33)

Which knowledge, skills and know- First and foremost, it is the comprehension of the text,
how in each of five areas are whether spoken or written (i.e. listening and reading
common for all translators? skills). The main goal of a translator is to understand
both the main idea of the text and its nuances. It is
extremely important to achieve a high level of proficiency
not only in the source language but also in the target
language, which means having a wide vocabulary and
mastering the grammar of both languages.

Nevertheless, it is important to understand the cultural


characteristics of the texts you translate, and thus be
able to translate culturally biased lexicon correctly.

Secondly, about the translation itself, you need to have


translation skills and techniques. You need to understand
how to make transformations in translation and how to
ensure a high-quality translation.

Third, every translator must have computer skills. This


applies to both direct computer skills and the use of
specialized translation programs.

Fourthly, it's extremely important to have soft skills, just


like any other employee, regardless of whether you work
freelance or in a company. Any translator or interpreter
needs to be able to interact with people properly. This
applies to both personal and interpersonal skills and
service provision.
