Course Objectives:
This paper will discuss the basics of environmental studies and issues pertaining to the same. The students would learn about the
basics of environmental laws and regime pertaining and a few major Supreme Court cases pertaining to environment in India

Pre-requisites:
The Student before studying this Course already possess a basic idea about the course content, as they study
environmental studies &Law paper in their First semester which provides them with a brief introduction of this subject .

Student Learning Outcomes:


As a result of taking this Course, the Student will be able to:

• The students would be aware of the importance of environment as an area of study.


• The students would get acquainted with the importance and impact of major present environmental issues.
• The student would be apprised with the basics of environmental law and current regime in India.
• The learning from the judgements of Supreme Court cases would expose them to the practical applicability of
laws and issues concerning Environment.
Course Contents/Syllabus:

Module I: Basics of environmental studies
 • Definition, scope and importance of Environmental studies • Need for public awareness, 25%

Module II: Major environmental issues 25%
 • Global warming, ozone depletion , green house effect, melting of polar ice caps,
contamination of underground water, food scarcity, smog, deforestation, biodiversity issues,
earthquake, floods. Polluter pay concept
Module III: Environmental law in India and Environmental regime 25%
 • Brief of the water (prevention and control of pollution act) 1974, environmental protect
act 1986,noise pollution (regulations and control) , rules, 2000. • National green tribunal •
Central pollution control board/state pollution control board/ joint boards’ • United
nations environment program
Module IV: Major supreme court cases concerning environmental issues 25%
