Home Activity on Chemical Reactions

Learning Outcomes:

1. Enumerate the different chemical reactions.

2. Represent chemical changes into balanced equations

A. Experiment with Hot Ice

Observation:

The combination of baking soda and vinegar crystalizes instantly when you pour it, making a tower of
crystals. Therefore, the sodium acetate or hot ice. The crystallization is exothermic, or the ice formed
was hot.

Chemical Equation Involved:

Baking soda + Vinegar --------> ______ + ______

Write the correct chemical formulas of the reactants and products.

NaHCO₃ + CH₃COOH --------> NaCH3COO + H2CO3

NaHCO₃ + CH₃COOH --------> NaCH3COO + H2O + CO2

Balance the chemical equation.

NaHCO₃ + CH₃COOH --------> NaCH3COO + H2O + CO2

Identify the type of Chemical reaction.

 Double Displacement

Application:

Sodium acetate is used in the textile industry to neutralize sulfuric acid waste streams and as a
photoresist while using aniline dyes.

B. Rubber Egg
Observation:

The little bubbles you see in the water are made of carbon dioxide gas. Once the shell is gone, the
vinegar will cross over the semi-permeable membrane (through a process called “osmosis”) and slightly
inflate the egg.

Chemical Equation involved:

Calcium Carbonate + Acetic Acid --------> _____+ ______ + _____

Write the correct chemical formulas of the reactants and products.

CaCO3 + CH₃COOH --------> Ca(CH3COO)2 + H2CO3

CaCO3 + CH₃COOH --------> Ca(CH3COO)2 + H2O + CO2

Balance the chemical equation.

CaCO3 + 2CH₃COOH --------> Ca(CH3COO)2 + H2O + CO2

Identify the type of Chemical reaction.

 Double Displacement

Application:

The calcium carbonate in the eggshell and the acetic acid in vinegar interact to form carbonic acid and
calcium acetate. Carbonic acid is widely used in the production of soft drinks, artificially carbonated
sparkling wines, and other bubbly beverages while Calcium acetate is used to control high blood levels
of phosphorus in people with kidney disease who are on dialysis.

C. Thermite Reaction
Observation:

In this classic experiment, a very quick spark of flame to produce molten iron is carried out by reacting
iron (II) oxide and aluminium powder together and igniting with a magnesium splint.

Chemical Equations Involved:

Iron Oxide + Aluminum --------> ______ + ______

Write the correct chemical formulas of the reactants and products.

Fe2O3 + Al --------> Al2O3 + Fe

Balance the chemical equation.

Fe2O3 + 2Al --------> Al2O3 + 2Fe

Identify the type of Chemical reaction.

 Single Displacement

Application:

A more reactive metal will displace a less reactive metal from a compound. The thermite reaction is a
good example of this. It is used to produce white hot molten (liquid) iron in remote locations for
welding.

D. Copper and Nitric Acid

Observation:
The copper nitrate salt that was formed is in deep blue color. The maroon-colored vapor is the nitrogen
dioxide.

Chemical equation involved:

Nitric acid + Copper --------> _____ + ______

Write the correct chemical formulas of the reactants and products.

HNO₃ + Cu --------> Cu(NO3)2 + NO2+ H2O

Balance the chemical equation.

4HNO₃ + Cu --------> Cu(NO3)2 + 2NO2 + 2H2O

Identify the type of Chemical reaction.

 Redox Reaction

Application:

Copper nitrate is used as a mordant and oxidizing agent in textile dyeing. It is used as a pigment for
Glass, enamels, and ceramics. Because of its toxicity, it is also used as a Fungicide, and wood
preservative.
