Home Activity 8 - Chemical Reactions - Gadi
Learning Outcomes:
The combination of baking soda and vinegar crystalizes instantly when you pour it, making a tower of
crystals. Therefore, the sodium acetate or hot ice. The crystallization is exothermic, or the ice formed
was hot.
Double Displacement
Application:
Sodium acetate is used in the textile industry to neutralize sulfuric acid waste streams and as a
photoresist while using aniline dyes.
B. Rubber Egg
Observation:
The little bubbles you see in the water are made of carbon dioxide gas. Once the shell is gone, the
vinegar will cross over the semi-permeable membrane (through a process called “osmosis”) and slightly
inflate the egg.
Double Displacement
Application:
The calcium carbonate in the eggshell and the acetic acid in vinegar interact to form carbonic acid and
calcium acetate. Carbonic acid is widely used in the production of soft drinks, artificially carbonated
sparkling wines, and other bubbly beverages while Calcium acetate is used to control high blood levels
of phosphorus in people with kidney disease who are on dialysis.
C. Thermite Reaction
Observation:
In this classic experiment, a very quick spark of flame to produce molten iron is carried out by reacting
iron (II) oxide and aluminium powder together and igniting with a magnesium splint.
Single Displacement
Application:
A more reactive metal will displace a less reactive metal from a compound. The thermite reaction is a
good example of this. It is used to produce white hot molten (liquid) iron in remote locations for
welding.
Redox Reaction
Application:
Copper nitrate is used as a mordant and oxidizing agent in textile dyeing. It is used as a pigment for
Glass, enamels, and ceramics. Because of its toxicity, it is also used as a Fungicide, and wood
preservative.
