Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger NTU-Rating
Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger NTU-Rating
1. CALCULATION OBJECTIVE
The objective of this calculation is to observe outlet temperature of the new hot
fluid from existing heat exchanger. This is a rating calculation and done using NTU-
Effectiveness analysis method.

5. RATING CALCULATION
Calculation are started by determine minimum heat capacity rate. The minimum heat
capacity rate could be from hot fluid or cold fluid.
Heat capacity ratio is dimensionless parameter which a ratio between minimum and maximum
heat capacity of correspond fluid
𝐶𝑚𝑖𝑛
𝐶𝑟 =
𝐶𝑚𝑎𝑥
Heat capacity ratio Cr = 0,1
Now introducing Number of Transfer Unit (NTU), which is also dimensionless parameter
that is widely used for heat exchanger analysis. NTU described as ratio UA from heat
exchanger to minimum heat capacity rate

𝑈𝐴
𝑁𝑇𝑈 =
𝐶𝑚𝑖𝑛
Then calculate the effectiveness (ε), as the ratio of the actual heat transfer rate
for a heat exchanger to the maximum possible heat transfer rate. For counterflow
shell and tube heat exchanger with one shell pass is :
−1
1 + 𝑒𝑥𝑝 −𝑁𝑇𝑈 (1 + 𝐶𝑟2 )
ε = 2 1 + 𝐶𝑟 + (1 + 𝐶𝑟2 ) 𝑥
1 − 𝑒𝑥𝑝 −𝑁𝑇𝑈 (1 + 𝐶𝑟2 )
Maximum heat transfer rate is define as follow :
Cr = 0,75
0,6
Cr = 1
0,5
0,4
