BRIEF HISTORY OF AMU
ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY

• Introduction- The campus of Aligarh Muslim university is spread over 467.6 hectare in the city of
Aligarh U.P. It is established by sir Syed Ahmad khan as the Mohammedan oriental college in
1875. There are 39000 plus regular students including 251 research scholar. It is residential
university with most of the student and staff residing on the campus. .there are 19 hall in with 13
boys hall of residence and 7 for girls and total 80 hostels. Sir Syed hall is oldest hall of the
university.

HISTORY

 The university was established by sir Syed Ahmad khan in 1875. It began to function on 24 may
1875. Sir Syed Ahmad khan wants to establishing a modern education system for Indian Muslim
population. His vision for Muslims political, influence as well as necessary skill like science and
technology. Sir Syed Ahmed khan vision for the college was based on his visit to Oxford and
Cambridge university and he wanted to an education system similar to British model.
 A committee was formed by the name of foundation of Muslim college and asked for fund. Then
viceroy and governor Thomas baring gave a donation of 10000 and Lt. Governor north western
provenance 1000 and with contribution reach fund 153920. Shambhu Narayan raja of Banaras
donated 60000, Nizam of Hyderabad donated 500000 lakh to this institute.

Department of Education

 The Department of Education of Aligarh Muslim University was established in 1923. It is among
the premier institutions of Teacher Education in India. More than 97 years, it has been
producing teachers who are competent and committed to their profession with a dedicated
attitude to serve the cause of education not only in India but globally, having a broader outlook,
scientific temper, and positive thinking. The products of this Department are not only spread
over the whole country but are serving in different countries of the world. We are committed
to producing such dedicated teachers who may, apart from a professional and humane teacher
ship, also represent, through their educational endeavor, the harmonious heritage of Indian
Unity in Diversity, the legacy of ancient Indian wisdom, Love, tolerance, and the spiritual
temperament of the spirit of Indian National culture through the ages.
