New Styling CX Xtrashift Transmission Calibration

Transmission Calibration Introduction

CX Xtrashift transmissions are controlled electro hydraulically by a combination

of an Electronic Control Module, which supplies a Pulse Width Modulated
electrical current to 5 proportional electro hydraulic solenoid valves.

The clutch pedal of the tractor is connected directly to a potentiometer that

signals to the Electronic Control Module (ECM) the position of the clutch pedal.

A steering column mounted Forward, and Reverse direction control lever, and
right console mounted speed gear lever, incorporating a powershift switch and
de-clutch button are also connected to the ECM, to allow the operator to select
the required direction and powershift speed.
The de-clutch button allows transmission speed gears to be selected without
depressing the clutch pedal, while the tractor is moving.

Transmission calibration is necessary in order for the Transmission Control

Module to learn the electrical voltage, and resistance values of the switches,
potentiometers, and electro hydraulic solenoid valves, used to engage the
transmission clutches.
During this process the Transmission Electronic Control Module reads from an
engine speed sensor, two transmission clutch speed sensors, and the tractor
axle speed sensor, in order to calibrate the necessary openings of the
proportional solenoid valves that supply oil to the clutches.

During the calibration two measurements are taken. The first measurement is the
number of Milli-amperes supplied the electro valves, and the second is the length
of time that the electrical current is supplied for to the electro valves until tractor
movement is sensed, in forward or reverse direction.
This measurement is sometimes referred to as the clutch fill time calibration, as
the ECM is calculating the electrical current required to fill the clutch with oil
behind the engagement piston, to the point where it is just starting to engage
drive, to the wheels of the tractor.

For this reason the Calibration is also described as a Dynamic Calibration, this is
because the tractors speed and range gears are engaged, and the clutches are
gradually engaged until movement is sensed by the transmission ECM, at which
point a calibration value is stored into the ECM.

Great Care, and attention should always be used when carrying out a dynamic
calibration for safety reasons, as should for any reason there be a malfunction
during the calibration, the tractor could move uncontrollably until the key switch is
placed in the off position.
Transmission Calibration General Information

Warning !
Only a competent person should carry out the transmission calibration
procedure while sitting in the operator’s seat with the tractor parked in a safe
area clear of obstructions and any other persons.

Warning !
BEFORE COMENCING the calibration procedure carefully read and familiarise
yourself with the general information, and full calibration procedure’s.

Warning !
Never operate the engine in a closed building, proper ventilation is required
under all circumstances.

Entry into the transmission calibration procedure is through the instrument panel
of the tractor. The following illustrations explain which parts of the instrument
panel are used to display calibration information, and move between the different
steps.

The instrument panel of the tractor can be split into five sections, (1) are
analogue gauges, (2) are warning lamps, (3) are membrane type buttons, (4) is
the LCD display, and (5) analogue engine tachometer.
The LCD Display is split into two sections to the left and right sides of the engine
tachometer. The right side of the display is for displaying tractor information such
as forward or reverse direction, tractor speed, transmission powershift speed,
and hitch position.

The Left side of the display is for 24 hr clock, PTO speed, and operator menu’s
such as area, distance, timer function, and the service, error code, and
calibration menu’s.
Access to all the different operator adjustable settings are entered into through
the menu key, and arrow keys to toggle up and down the different functions in
each menu.

Key

The Calibration menu is used to initialize, and move through all of the
transmission calibration steps. The diagram above shows the left LCD display in
the first calibration menu, by pressing the menu key to select the calibration
menu, and using the arrow keys it is possible to enter to the “tc” menu, and carry
out the steps on the following pages.
The lower left window of the LCD display has two functions during calibration,
one is to indicate the calibration status position, as to what function is currently
being calibrated, and the second is to display system calibration error codes,
should a fault occur during the calibration process.

This number will either

indicate calibration
status position, or
calibration failure code
from table’s below

Calibration Status Indication Code

Number Description
0 Calibration menu entered no action taken
1 Calibration started
10 Clutch pedal calibration ongoing
11 Clutch pedal calibration OK
20 Waiting for Engine started low range, first speed, first powershift
Park brake of, and forward reverse direction lever in forward position
21 Forward clutch calibration on going
22 Reverse clutch calibration on going
23 First powershift clutch calibration on going
24 Second powershift clutch calibration on going
25 Third powershift clutch calibration on going
50 Calibration finished and OK

Transmission Calibration Error Codes

Number Description
51 Engine not running
52 Operator not present
53 Forward Reverse direction lever not in neutral position
54 Forward Reverse direction lever not in forward position (time out )
60 Clutch pedal calibration failed
61 Forward clutch calibration failed
62 Reverse clutch calibration failed
63 First powershift clutch calibration failed
64 Second powershift clutch calibration failed
65 Third powershift clutch calibration failed
Transmission Calibration Procedure
Step 1
Heat Transmission oil to working temperature (35 to 45 degrees Celsius) to
ensure consistent and repeatable calibration takes place. During this period drive
the tractor in both forward and reverse direction, and all powershift speeds to
ensure all proportional solenoid valves are working and lubricated.
Ensure there are no active transmission error codes, displayed on the instrument
panel. If a fault is present repair it before entering next steps.

Step 2
Park the tractor on hard level ground, apply the park brake and place the forward
/reverse shuttle lever and the speed gear selection lever in neutral position.
Ensure that the PTO, and Air conditioning are disengaged, and the key switch is
in the off position.

Step 3
Turn the key to the on position, and wait for the instrument panel to carry out its
self test procedure.

Step 4
Using the arrow keys on the left side of the Instrument panel, move to the
Calibration menu. (Arrow under the screwdriver Icon in Left side LCD is
illuminated),press the menu key for 1 second, and again using the arrow keys
cycle to the “tc” menu, and the lower left window of the LCD display will be as
indicated below.
Step 5
Fully depress the clutch pedal and press the menu key for 1 second and release.
The character in the lower left window of the LCD will initially show “1” to indicate
calibration has started, and after approximately 2 seconds will change to “10” to
indicate clutch pedal calibration is taking place.

After the “10” has been shown for approximately 5 seconds, fully release the
clutch pedal, and after a further 5 seconds, if the clutch pedal calibration is
accepted then “11” will be displayed for Acknowledgment that the clutch pedal
calibration is OK.

11

10

Step 6
Immediately after the clutch pedal OK indication is given (“11”) the lower left
window of the LCD will display “20”. This is indicating that the engine should now
be started, and engine speed set to approximately 1300 RPM, and the tractor
should be placed in low range, first speed and first powershift, park brake moved
to the off position, and forward direction selected.
As soon as all these steps are in place and the transmission ECU recognises
forward has been selected, transmission calibration is fully automatic, and the
lower left window of the LCD will show “21” to indicate forward clutch calibration
is taking place.

21

Note. Clutch calibration will take approximately 30 seconds and at the end of the
process a small forward movement of the tractor will be felt
Step 7
When the lower left window of the LCD indicates “22”, the forward calibration is
complete, and reverse calibration is automatically engaged. No operator input is
required at this point.

Note. Reverse clutch calibration will take approximately 30 seconds and at the
end of the process a small backwards movement of the tractor will be felt

Step 8
When the lower left window of the LCD indicates “23” reverse clutch calibration is
complete, and first powershift clutch calibration is being requested.
Leave the forward /reverse direction lever in the forward direction, and wait for
the first powershift to be calibrated.

Note .First powershift clutch calibration will take approximately 15 seconds and
at the end of the process a small forward movement of the tractor will be felt
Step 9
When the lower left window of the LCD indicates “24” the first speed powershift
clutch is calibrated, and the second powershift speed clutch calibration is being
requested. No operator input is required at this stage.

Note .Second powershift clutch calibration will take approximately 15 seconds

and at the end of the process a small forward movement of the tractor will be felt

Step10
When the lower left window of the LCD indicates “25” the second speed
powershift clutch is calibrated, and the third powershift speed clutch calibration is
being requested. No operator input is required at this stage.

Note .Third powershift clutch calibration will take approximately 15 seconds and
at the end of the process a small forward movement of the tractor will be felt
Step 11
When the lower left window of the LCD indicates “50” transmission calibration is
complete.
Return the Forward / Reverse direction lever to the neutral position, and turn off
the key to store the calibration into the transmission electronic control module
