THE AGENT SECRET by Joseph Conrad

"The Secret Agent" by Joseph Conrad is a literary masterpiece published in 1907, that
immerses you in a world of intrigue about issues of anarchy, conspiracy and treason in
London society.

Based on a true story set in London from the early twentieth century, the novel
describes the complexities of politics, moral and human psychology. Conrad creates a
storyline with dark characters and tense situations. It not only captures the atmosphere of
the time, but also makes you think about morality and confusion in decision-making. "The
Secret Agent" it’s a captivating read that provokes a reflection about power and corruption.

The story is based on the life of Adolf Verloc, his wife Winnie and his special brother in
law Steve, who lives in a store on the ground floor of the city. Verloc is a spy and anarchist
who works for the embassy and is forced by Mr. Vladimir to organise a terrorist act against
“The Greenwich Observatory” and if he didn't do it, they would fire him.

In the argument, I missed that they didn't do justice for Steve. In my opinion I think that
it’s a wise way to make the reader see that terrorists and the policeman are the same
condition.

In its shortest version, I completely advise its reading, with an addictive plot and an
atmosphere that is described with great wisdom and with a tragic but surprising ending that
leaves you reflecting about human values.
