EARTH’S ROTATION

Name: _______________________________ Section: ________________

Learning Objective:

Differentiate between rotation and revolution and describe the effects

of the Earth’s motions.

Unpacked Competencies:
 Describe the Earth’s rotation on its axis.
 Discuss what causes day and night.
 Investigate the movement of the Earth on its axis.
 Define obliquity.
 Perform an experiment that demonstrates obliquity.

Key Concepts
(Science 6 LM pp. 208-210)
Rotation is the movement of the
Earth around an invisible line called
axis.
As the Earth rotates, it seems like
the Sun is moving across the sky, but
it’s really the Earth that is spinning. It
takes one day or 24 hours for the Earth
to complete its rotation. The rotation or https://k8scoollessons.com/wp-
acontent/uploads/2013/05/earths-rotation.jpg

spinning of the Earth on its axis causes day and night. The part of the Earth
facing the Sun experiences daytime, whereas the part of the Earth not facing
the Sun experiences nighttime.

The Earth rotates in a

counterclockwise direction. This is why the
Sun seems to move from east to west during
the day.

As the Earth rotates, the speed of all the things around the Earth’s
axis depends on the location: the closer we are to the equator, the larger the
path we move around each day, and therefore the faster we travel with the
Earth’s rotation (see figure 1).

The rotation of the Earth on its axis is tilted

as it travels around the sun. The angle of tilt of the
Earth's axis of rotation is known as obliquity. It
causes the day to be longer in the summer and
shorter in the winter. The axial tilt or obliquity is
the angle between the axis of rotation of the Earth
and its orbital plane, it remains confined
between 21.8° and 24.4°. The Earth’s obliquity Figure 3

Exercises/Activities:

Activity 1A: Rotating Mind

Objective: Describe the Earth’s rotation on its axis.
What you need: ballpen and paper
Directions: Read and answer each sentence carefully. Encircle the letter of
the correct answer.

1. Which statement describes rotation? Rotation refers to __________.

A. the movement in its axis
B. spinning in its axis
C. revolving in its axis
B. stoping in its axis

2. Rotation of the Earth as it spins on its axis takes _______

A. 12 hours C. 1 leap year
B. 24 hours D. 365 ¼ days

3. The following statement describes rotation, EXCEPT:

A. The Earth travels around the sun.
B. It causes day and night.
C The Earth moves from west to east.
D. The Sun rises in the east and sets in the west.

4. The Earth is spinning on an imaginary line called __________.
A. axis B. elliptical C. equator D. orbit

5. The Earth rotates in a __________ direction.

A. clockwise B. counterclockwise C. east D. West

Activity 1B: Moving Mind

Objective: Describe the Earth’s rotation on its axis.
What you need: ballpen and paper
Directions: Underline the word inside the parenthesis that would make each
statement true.

1. The (spinning, swirling) of the Earth on its axis causes day and night.
2. (Daytime, Nighttime) occurs when one side of the Earth is facing the
sun.
3. (Daytime, Nighttime) occurs when one side of the Earth is facing away
from the sun.
4. The Sun rises in the (East ,West) and sets in the (West, East).
5. Earth’s (rotation, revolution) causes day and night.

Activity 2: Good Morning/ Good Night

Objective: Discuss what causes day and night
What you need: plastic ball/styro ball or any sphere-shaped fruit (santol,
guava, kalamansi, apple), flashlight, barbeque stick and a marker
What to do: Prepare all the materials. Perform the following:
(Safety first: Be careful in using pointed objects)
1. Push the stick to the center of the ball
(plastic ball/styroball or any sphere-shaped
fruit
( santol, guava, kalamansi, apple).
2. Assume that the Earth is the plastic
ball/styro ball, or any sphere-shaped fruit
(santol, guava, kalamansi, apple), and the
flashlight represents the sun.
3. Now place the plastic ball/styroball, or any
sphere-shaped fruit(santol, guava,
kalamansi, apple) on the table and focus the
flashlight to it. The picture in figure 4 will
serve as your guide. Figure 4

_____________________________________________________________________
2. What do you observe to the part of the ball facing away from the light?
_____________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________

3. Do all parts of the ball receive light? Why?

_____________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________
4. How can you relate the activity to the idea of what causes day and
night?
_____________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________
Rubric:
3 – Idea is clearly stated, and reasons are strongly agreeable.
Supports idea with clear and thorough example.
2 – Idea is clearly stated, but the reasons are not so strongly
agreeable. Example with explanation is also stated.
1 – Idea is not clear. No example and explanation stated.

Activity 3: Spin It
Objective: Investigate the movement of the Earth on its axis.
What to do:
1. Use your material in activity 2 which is
the plastic ball/styro ball or any sphere-
shaped fruit (santol, guava, kalamansi,
apple).
2. Spin it following the illustration in
figure 5.
3. After doing the activity, answer the
guide questions.

Guide Questions:

1. What is being demonstrated in the activity?

________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
2. What is the direction of the Earth as you spin it on its axis?
________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________

3. How long does it take for the Earth to rotate on its axis?
________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________

Activity 4: Tilt Me
Objective: Define obliquity
What you need: ballpen and paper
Directions: Write TRUE if the statement is corret and FALSE if it is not.

________1. Obliquity causes day and night.

________2. Obliquity causes the seasons to change.
________3. The Earth’s obliquity is always the same.
________4. The Earth’s obliquity remains confined
between 21.8° and 24.4°.
________5. Obliquity causes the day to be longer in the summer
and shorter in the winter.

Reflection:

Sun rises on the East and sets on the West. Generally, people start to
work on day’s activity as the Sun rises and take their rest as the Sun sets. A
famous line from an advertisement says “Para Kanino Ka Bumabangon?”
inspired us to look forward for a brighter day.
Being a grade 6 pupil, answer the famous line “Para Kanino Ka
Bumabangon?” in 3-5 sentences as you face the challenges in your studies
in this time of pandemic.
