01 A DRIFTING EDUCATION

Academic/individual
5th year
London, UK
Tutor: Miraj Ahmed/ Martin Jameson

A DRIFTING EDUCATION looks at the life long learning in

a future scenario where there is limited amount of work. It
discusses the ideas between work, play and education.

A DRIFTING EDUCATION reimagines a new education system

which requires an active role of all citizens to participate in this
learning experience to make everyone become everything they
want to be and away from the traditional identical life cycle of
education, work and retirement.

Standing towers and floating plates invades abandoned

buildings in the future cities to form the framework of a
drifting education, where people wander, see, play and more
importantly live freely in a life time.

YEAR5
The project takes three buildings of oxford street: Selfrdiges,
Debenhams and Nike town as renovation example to show
how education can becomes the life of future citizens.

LIFE IS A MACHINE

Borrowed the setting from Myth of Sisyphus,

this film is a critic on the traditional identical
life cycle of education, work and retirement.
This pattern of living to a large extent
constructed us to a single identity. Life Is A
Machine questions whether we can break the
pattern, reconstruct ourselves and be able to
realise our multiple potentials.

A DRIFTING EDUCATION

Throughout history education has been a

machine, a commodity, a means to an end but
never be the end itself. A Drifting Education
imainges a future when education is play
and play a constant game of drifting in the
city. Learnign is to drift, to see and to know.
Emptied factories, abandoned offices, vacant
shopping malls in the future all become

LAND OF DRIFTING EDUCATION

In the future, education is not one stage of life,

but the life itself. Land of Drifting Education
will takes you through a journey in the new

besides towers, plates over plates. Playing and
learning become one thing. People are living

Documentary film
Tutor: Ila Beka/ Louise lemoine

Aunt Du observes the life of rural-urban migrant workers, locally

known as Nongmingong, by exploring the social and spatial
limbo that this group of marginalized workers experiences in
China.

The Documentary film takes 6 months which invovles a process

of really digging into the lifes of the group of people (Canal 8
cleaners) by researching, observing, getting along with them,
shooting, talking, smoking, writing and editing.

This film was conducted as a part of Diploma 16 unit at the

Architectural Association School of Architecture entitled Homo
Urbanus: Laboratory for Sensitive Observers, taught by Ila
Bêka, Louise Lemoine and Gili Merin.

And screening in Venice Architecture Film Festival and London

A Du Hao Film YEAR4

AUNT DU
Aunt Du is the main character of the film Aunt
Du.

Aunt Du is a 63 years old. Her hometown is at a

village far from the city center of Langfang which
named the Wudi village. It is far from the city so
the city expansion haven't affect her hometown.
This means she won't be able to get money from
selling the farmland to the government. Also
cultivating farmland won't be able to raise the
family. So she has been working in the cities for
10 years, taking various jobs but non of them
provide contracts and insurance.

She has moved places for many times, either for

the cheapest rent or being asked out beacuse
the houses she stayed in are for other uses.
For example, she used to live in the room that
the elder couple in the Film are now living,
but asked out becasue the elder couple (the
contractor's relative) need a place to live in.

Her name is Du Chunsheng which means "Born

in spring".
By moving in and out of their living and "I work to save money for the future when i get old"
working places, I tried to observe in detail the
components of their lives and the temporal and
in-between statues in the cities. After staying
with them, I found that although physically and --Aunt Du 63 years old
Financially they live in a hardship, they are very
brave and positive towards their life. They do
have lots of concerns, but they also have some
hopes for the future to come.

YEAR4
A DOCUMENTARY FILM PROJECT| AN ARCHITECTURE PROJECT

I see Aunt Du an architecture project the same as an documentary film project. In the
6 months time with them, I have been to moving in and out Aunt Du's home place, the
workers' gathering and rest place(the stroage room), their working environement and even
their cooking spaces.

The first person experience on other's life makes me think that architecture is not buildings,
infrastructures, urban development, environments, drawings, designs or even experiences.
I love architecture. I love how it is just in presenceI of everything at everytime. It is not only Workplace-outside-sweeping Lunch room-inside-cleaning Group yard-outside-knitting
the background of the stories, but the story itself. It is the embodiment of the relationship
between man and the world.

Architecture is a film in a material form.

UNDERGROUND GARDEN

Academic/individual

Krýsuvík, Iceland
Tutor: Jennifer Chen/ Maren Klasing

3rd year

In the time of the next ice age, year 2060, humans are finding new ways of
living together. By using the geothermal enegry, this projects tries to create
a community for human beings to be together with the nature in extreme
conditions. It is about living, care and preservation. It is as much about fear
as about love.

Fear of the loss: the loss of animals; the loss of plants; the loss of human
civilazatin and the loss of evidence of human existence make the society
concerned more and more about preserving plants and animals for the
future.

At the same time

Many genothermal station has been set up rapidly in recent 10 years in

places where volcano activity is active to provide geothermal energy.

Human beings move to these places to find the heat souce to fight with the
harsh weather. Ring of fire, Iceland, Newzeland are all popular locations.

My design uses Iceland Krysuvik geothermal area as a test ground to start

a community who excavates undground gardens of 4 climates deep to 200
meters and uses the excavated rocks to build vernacular architecture using
drystone technique to fight against cold climte.

In this year, my projects starts from an investigation on mateiral, new

prototype of structures are developled and utilized in a building project at
the end of the year.

Material study
Material: Concrete

Structure: Catenary

Method: haning chain model is sprayed with concrete, inverted and became
caternary structure. Different combinations of chains and posistions of
landings are tested for a variety of spatial experiences.

Building project
Broadway street in Los Angeles used to be famous for its theatres and
dramas. But now abandoned with the fall of downtown. At the meantime,
most actors are barely surviving in Los Angeles.

This projects tries to revive downtown area by reintroducing Acting culture

back. On the roof of the old Regent Theatre, a group of new catenar
sturctrues are added to form a place for actors to live in. Their daily life is
the performance. Different routes are available for audience to choose to
observe or experience the actors like. The key idea here is openness of
privacy and the ethos is "to live is to performance".

06 SHEKOU THEATRE

Shekou theatre is a renovation project that we win in the

spring of 2020 through a countrywide competition in
Shenzhen. I am one of the leading members in the team.

Shekou theatre has been in use for serveral decades and

become a common memory of the community. It is a place
that encourages people to get together to watch films and
spend time.

So to continue this idea of gathering in the new era, we tried

to open the building as much as possible to give this spaces
back to the community for daily use and connect seperate

07 QIANHAI PUBLIC SPACE
Qianhai Publice Space is an international competiton. It is a complex project which
involves urban design, landscape design, architecture and public transport design.
We collaborated with 3 different firms and won the 4th place.

The projects involves 6 areas, 3 main streets, 4 public buildings and one
underground station. The challange is how to work out a way to link different areas
and keep each its unique character. Our strategy is to create a walkable path that
goes through every unit enabled by a combination of stairs, bridges, lifts, shades,
pavilions and platforms. And along this path forms progrmmes.

I am one of the key designer in the team and responsible for the masterplanning of
cultural complex containing four cultural buildings, the public spaces in between
and the links to the coastal park and green park at two ends.

The most important thing I learnt from this project is how to collaborate with other
firms to handle a big project.

WORK
08 SHENZHEN BIENNALE

Themed as “Ci-Vi-llage (city village collage)”, this

exhibition presents not only an intriguing story
of folks in the urban village of Bantian area which
is lively but also how they spontaneously help to
bring a spring of vitality to the city.

“Ci-Vi-llage” records 14 villages with unique

features along Wuhe Road. Their distinctive
personalities and dynamics make a strong
contrast to the identical formal planning around
China. The seemingly enclosed urban villages in
fact are open to the rural population with dreams,
which enhance the interaction between the city
and urban villages. As a result, the urban villages
are transforming to merge with the city and they
together are becoming a promising collage of
Shenzhen.

In this exhibition, we emphasize each village’s

uniqueness in the form of multimedia. In the end,
we presented 8 pieces of work including models,
videos, installations, photos and drawings in an
untraditional and fantasy way.

The drawing on the left is called Wuhe Fantasy.

The work of Wuhe Fantasy takes me 2 weeks to

do research and 1 month to design and draw. For
doing this work, I visited 14 urban viilages along
Wuhe Road and extracted each village's unique
character. Based on their own personalities, I
redesigned each viilage in a narrative and fantasy
way for the aspiration of the future.

For the process, I made collaged photos and

wrote down stories for each village. Then I chose
the best perspetive angle or drawing method for
each village's character and orgnized them into
one sigle drawing with the size of 6m×2m on the
wall, making models for each viilage one rhino,
and finally further edit on illustrator.
