 MSW COLLECTION
• MSW collection is an important aspect in
maintaining public health in cities around the
world
• The amount of MSW collected varies widely by
region and income level; collection within cities
can also differ
• Collection rates range from a low of 41% in low-
income countries to a high of 98% in high-income
countries
• Waste collection in India is around 70% (Sharholy
et al., 2007)
 MSW COLLECTION
• Collection of solid waste from point of production
to the point of treatment or disposal.
• According to Municipal Waste Management
Rules(2000), it is the responsibility of
municipalities to prohibit littering of solid waste
in cities, towns and in urban areas notified by
governments. To facilitate compliance, municipal
authority have to organize house to house
collection through any of the methods.
 METHOD FOR COLLECTION
• Community bin collection
• House to house collection
• Collection on regular time interval (which
must be pre-informed)
• Scheduling by using bell ringing of musical
vehicle (without exceeding the noise levels)
 HOUSE-TO-HOUSE
• Waste collectors visit each individual house to
collect garbage. The user generally pays a fee
for this service
 COMMUNITY BINS
• Users bring their garbage to community bins
that are placed at fixed points in a
neighbourhood or locality. MSW is picked up
by the municipality as per a set schedule.
 CURBSIDE PICK-UP
• Users leave their garbage directly outside their
homes according to a garbage pick-up
schedule set with the local authorities (house-
to-house collectors not typical)
 SELF DELIVERED/CONTRACTED
• Generators deliver the waste directly to
disposal sites or transfer stations, or hire third-
party operators (or the municipality).
• Case of biomedical waste and industrial waste
 TRANSPORTATION
• Recycling trailers
• Collect the decomposables and recyclables
separately
