Introduction:

Gate valves are essential components in various industries, enabling precise

control over fluid flow in pipelines and systems. Among the different types of gate
valves, the wedge gate valve stands out for its efficient
design and reliable performance. this essential
component, emphasizing the casting techniques employed
to achieve precision, durability, and operational integrity.
As Casting production has the advantages of low
production cost and high production efficiency. This valve
can be installed in a wide range of applications, such as
sewage, water, and other working mediums. The valve can also be used in low-
temperature and high-pressure environments
Main parts:
The main parts of these valves are the bonnet, wedge halves, seat, and stem. The
wedge halves are coupled together with springs. These springs boost the load at
lower pressures.
Functionality:
The wedge gate valve's functionality relies on a sliding gate or wedge that moves
vertically between two seat rings to regulate fluid flow. The design and
construction of the gate valve significantly impact its performance, including
factors such as sealing capability, pressure resistance, and durability.

Temperature:
Another factor that determines the size of the valve is its maximum operating
temperature. When it comes to the internals, the stem is the part that transfers
the torque from the handwheel to the gate. It can be operated soundly between -
29°C to 425°C.
Maintenance:
The wedge gate valve can be repaired easily. First, the fluid source should be
turned off before reassembling the valve. Once the parts are removed, inspect
them for damages. If any problem is found, dismantle the valve and repair it .

Material:
Since a valve body is required for long-lasting applications, Where the stiffness of
the component is more crucial than its tensile strength, the ideal material to
manufacture is found to be grey cast iron (ASTM A126).
Grey cast iron (ASTM A126) is used due to its combination of mechanical
properties, corrosion resistance, machinability, cost-effectiveness, and design
flexibility.
The grades “No.20 or No.25” (corresponding to GG15, EN-GJL in other countries) -
150, T150, 150, and HT150 are available if all we need is grey cast iron or cast iron
and there are no special demands about its mechanical properties. The table
above shows the material equivalent according to other regions.
Higher material grades will make it more difficult to drill further into particular
goods, such as stove parts. As a result, higher grades are not necessary for these
parts because they will increase manufacturing costs and fault rates. Therefore, it
will be best to use the lower grades for casting production unless they’re required.
We chose “HT150” as our cast iron grade. The elements percentage found in this
grade is shown in the table above.
The average percentages of the elements are:
- Carbon (C): 3.3%
- Silicon (Si): 2.1%
- Phosphorous (P): 0.15%
According to our research, we found that:
- Measured Strength (𝜎m) = 310 MPa
- Measured Hardness = 785 MPa

Calculations
Si %+ P %
1- Carbon Equivalent : C.E. = C% + 3
C%
2- Carbon Index : Sc = 4.3−( Si %+ P % )

3.3
66
Sc = 4.3−( 2.1+0.15 )
1 = 71 = 0.9296
3

3– Calculated strength: 𝜎c = 102 – 82.5 Sc

66 kg
𝜎c = 102 – 82.5 * 71 = 25.31 ( mm
2 ) = 248.29 MPa

4- Calculated Hardness:
HBNc = 100 + 4.3 𝜎m (where 𝜎m = measured strength)
HBNc = 100 + 4.3 * 310 = 1433
5- Relative Strength (degree of normality):
σm 310
RG = σc = 248.29 = 1.25

6- Relative Hardness:
HBN measured 785
RH = HBN CALCUlATED = 1433 = = 0.548

7 – Quality Number:
RG 1.25
QC = RH = .548 = 2.28
