10. If leakage appears out of the gate seal, tighten the packing
gland bolts evenly and only enough to stop the leakage.
Over tightening can impede valve operation.
1. Periodic inspection of the liner will determine the liner wear life for
each application. Remove valve from pipeline and measure liner
I.D. This can be compared to the original liner I.D. from either the
general arrangement drawing or NewCon brochure.
3. Remove valve actuator by unbolting four bolts between yoke and valve
body, plus two bolts attaching clevis to gate. Do not alter clevis adjust-
ment or set screw on cylinder rod.
5. Split body halves after removal of all body assembly bolts thus allowing
removal of the liner, gate seal, and gate.
6. Install liner in proper direction. Liner has molded key on one side that
fits a cast notch on outlet half only. This applies to valve sizes 2”-16”.
larger valves 18”-40” do not have inlet or outlet body halves and those
liners can be installed either way.
(Note: incorrect orientation will cause the valve to be inoperable.)
7. Reinstall 2”-16” gates, being careful to put the beveled edge mating the
beveled edge in the liner. 18”-40” gates are double beveled and can be
installed either way. Usually a new gate is not required unless it’s found
to be damaged by water hammer or it was left in the partially open or
closed position.

8. With the gate in the closed position, install a new gate seal. Be careful
and make sure the beveled edge on the gate seal goes into the packing
area first, to sit on top of the beveled top lip of the liner.
Reinstall the packing gland and initially tighten the packing gland evenly

Cycle the gate several times and retighten packing bolts, if necessary.
If valve is tight to operate, loosen gland bolts until gate moves freely.
11. Electric Actuators- Valve stem should be kept lubricated at all times.
This will extend the life of the bronze stem nut, which is designed to be
a “wear part”. Other factors which affect stem nut wear life include:
proper fit between stem and stem nut, stem maintenance, and actuator
speed (RPM’s). Periodic inspection of the stem nut may be required.

NewCon Hydrostatic Testing Procedure
NewCon Company performs a hydrostatic test on every valve produced. The results
of the test are documented on an Assembly Inspection & Test Form that is retained by
NewCon. Copies of the test record are available upon request.
The test includes installing test flanges (one blind flange), and subjecting them with wa-
ter pressure to 1.5 times the valve’s pressure rating. Valve sizes 2” thru 28” are tested
to 225 psi to assure the 150 psi valve rating. Valve sizes 30” thru 40” are tested to 150
psi to assure the 100 psi valve rating. All hydro testing is done with the gate in the
closed position. The test verifies that there is not any leakage, permanent gate deflec-
tion, and assures the overall integrity of the valve assembly. Any valve that may fail this
test is either rejected or reworked until it can pass our test criteria, which requires Zero
Leakage to pass the test.

Trouble Shooting Guide
1) Make sure the flanges are full face, flat faced flanges. Raised face, or “stub end”
can create a “pinch” on our liner.
2) Check to make sure that the bolts in the “chest area” of the valve do not protrude
too deeply into the valve body. Our drawings specify the maximum depth of
penetration for these bolts.
3) If the valves are air operated, make sure that you have adequately sized air lines
and solenoid valves with adequate Cv flows. Contact factory for
recommendations based on valves sizes.
4) If the above steps check out, try loosening the flange bolts a bit, especially if
using rubber lined pipe flanges or gaskets. Loosen them up enough to get the
actuator moving, but not so much as to cause flange leakage.
5) As a last resort, try loosening the packing gland bolts a bit. Loosen them all
equally, but not so much as to cause the valve to leak through the gate seal.
6) If all above measures fail, contact NewCon factory at (218) 262-3841. We can
have a local representative come out and take a further look at the application, or
we will come out ourselves.
