Reading Strategies
Multiple choice test
Multiple choice test is better to do as a True
False NS task, any option of the test should be
asked - Is it true? if Yes - this variant is correct.

1 8
Anonymous 3/9/23 9:38PM
1. Read the task carefully. Underline the key words in each of the
question.

Anonymous 3/9/23 9:43PM

2. Do not overthink. If there is no information in the text then the
answer is NS! If the information in the text is the same as in the
question then the answer is True! If it is the other way round
then the answer is false!

Anonymous 3/11/23 12:02PM

If there is only a half that is true, then the answer is FALSE

Anonymous 3/13/23 7:40AM

Work on vocabulary from the text and the synonym or way in
which the same idea was conveyed in the task.

Юлия Овсянникова 6/22/23 4:52PM

Don't try to use your own logic and knowledge. Give your
answers based on the text only

Anonymous 10/11/23 10:26AM

Read the question and options carefully before looking at the
passage.Look for keywords or synonyms in the options within
the passage.Eliminate incorrect answer choices.Pay attention to
negative words (e.g., "not," "except") in the question.

Anonymous 10/12/23 6:44AM

Before you read the passage, read the question stems and
underline the most important words and ideas. Don't look at the
options (A, B. C and D) yet. Remember that the questions follow
the order of the information in the passage. Read the passage
quickly and mark the relevant sections for each question. Write
the question numbers in the margin so that you can find the
sections again easily. Go through the questions one by one. Read
the section of the passage you have marked carefully to make
sure you are in the correct place. When you feel you have
understood the passage completely, then read the four
options(A. B. C and D). Choose the option that answers the
question or completes the sentence to match the meaning of the
text.

Anonymous 3/1/24 5:23PM

remember that you have NO background knowledge. Turn off
your logic. Just find the key words, go to the text and find the
right information.

Your Task:
Write 1 or 2 reading strategies for each task: what helps
your student to do this particular task? What's the
method?

Matching

Anonymous 10/7/22 7:48PM
Read the task. Read the statements/features before the text +
underline key words. Skim the passage to get the main idea and
ideas in each paragraph. Underline features when they occur.
Mark ideas + note the number of question. Go through questions
> find underlined features. Read the section carefully to check. Be
careful with what goes to the answer sheet (the correct letter).

Anonymous 12/9/22 5:27AM

1) Read the instruction but not the sentences. 2) Read the text
thoroughly once (if you start with the task sentences first, you
may be confused by the names you haven't seen yet, so they
don't have any accosiations for you). 3) Go to read the sentences
and names (you already saw the, before and some connection
might already start ariring in your head). 4) Take each name and
read this paragraph, then go back to the sentences and choose
the ones which suit this researcher. Do it with every name. While
doing it, match each sentence in a task with a sentence from a
text to be sure they really represent the same idea.

Юлия Овсянникова 6/22/23 4:28PM

If there is a task like this in S's task it could be a good strategy
to underline all names while reading and then try to compare the
info around those names and compare it to the sentences in the
task

Anonymous 6/27/23 10:44AM

1. A S should read the instructions carefully (for all tasks MUST),
then the list of the options given to realize what the statements
are going to be about (if a S has statements to match). Finding
key words/phrases is also a must.

Anonymous 10/11/23 10:30AM

Skim both the text and the list of options to understand what
information is being matched.Identify keywords and phrases in
both the passage and the options.Carefully compare the
information in the passage with the options and use elimination
if needed.

Anonymous 10/12/23 6:33AM

Remember that the statements don't use exactly the same words
and phrases as you see in the passage. Remember that some
sections may contain two answers and some none at all.

Predict the word: noun or verb goes into a gap

Anonymous 10/10/22 7:27AM

Double-check the task (how many words/numbers can you
write) and check your spelling as you copy the word from the
text exactly as it is

Юлия Овсянникова 6/22/23 4:10PM

Ss needs to predict the information for the sentences and use
the words from the text to complete them.

Anonymous 10/12/23 6:22AM

Write numbers as figures, e.g. '104' - not as words, e.g. 'one
hundred and four'. If you aren't sure, always write something. No
marks are taken off for wrong answers.
Which paragraph contains the following

1 4
Anonymous 10/10/22 7:35AM
First read the sentences and underline key words, then scan the
paragraphs looking for the sentenecs with the same topic (key
words may be paraphrased). Underline the sentences in the
paragraphs that you think confirm your answers - it will help if
you are not sure and need to come back to decide which
paragraph fits better.

Anonymous 5/20/23 11:02AM

If a student is a quick and experienced reader it might seem
reasonable to first read the text, underlining the key
words/phrases/ideas as the reading progresses. Then check out
the options given and decide upon the answers. At this stage
one or two options may be selected. If needed the student may
return to the specific paragraphs using the key
words/phrases/ideas as markers to confirm the answers. It may
seem time-consuming but it works well for experienced readers.
Otherwise it might be a good idea to first start with scanning
the options and then reading the paragraphs one by one
underlying key words/phrases/ideas, chosing the answers as
the student goes. Finally, double check the answers to make sure
the student is happy with them (if there is time))

Юлия Овсянникова 6/22/23 4:44PM

For some Ss it can be even possible not to return back to the
text if this task is the second one and they've already understood
it quite well. If not, they need to find the information in the text
, to scan it

Anonymous 10/11/23 10:32AM

Read the question to understand what specific information you
need to find.Scan the passage for keywords or phrases that
match the information in the question.Look for the paragraph
that contains the relevant information.

Summary

Anonymous 3/9/23 8:17PM
When you have summmary copletion with options, it

Anonymous 3/9/23 8:19PM

it's important to think about synonyms, as the given options are
not the exact words from the text. they are synonyms

Anonymous 10/11/23 10:30AM

Read the summary sentence or paragraph carefully.Identify the
main idea and supporting details in the passage.Look for
keywords or synonyms

Anonymous 10/12/23 6:41AM

Look for clues in the summary that tell you the type of
information you're looking for. For example, the phrase 'delayed
by as much as' indicates that you're looking for a period of time.
Sometimes the wording of the summary tells you what to look
for, for example 'this fell by around .. .' , indicates you are looking
for a number but you may see various numbers in the passage.
Read carefully to know which is correct.

Flowchart Completion

Anonymous 12/8/22 11:27PM
1. Read the text; 2 Understand the main idea, remember the
sequence of stages; 3. Try to predict the type of words in the
gaps; 4. Listen and fill the gaps; 5. Check that the words have
sense, spelled correctly and grammatically fit.

Anonymous 12/9/22 5:20AM

1) A students quickly reads the text paying attention to what
steps are mentioned in each passage (using key words). 2) A
students has a look at the gaps trying to predict a part of speech
or if possible a particulat word. 3) A student goes back to the
text finding a necessary passage by key words and scans the
passage to find the exact word or phrase to complete the gap.
Do it with every gap 4) Finally, a student should read the given
scheme to check logic of it.

Юлия Овсянникова 6/22/23 4:35PM

Before reading info can be predicted. After reading and
understanding the text a student can go to the chart and try to
complete it and return back to the necessary parts of the text.

Anonymous 10/11/23 10:31AM

Examine the flowchart and identify the missing information.Read
the passage to locate the relevant information needed to
complete the flowchart.Pay attention to the sequence and logical
connections between steps in the flowchart.

Anonymous 10/12/23 6:23AM

Remember that the notes follow the order of information in the
passage. In tables, read the information from left to right, not up
and down. In diagrams read the labels in clockwise order - the
question numbers follow the order of information in the passage.

Fill in the Gaps

Sentence Completion

1 3
Юлия Овсянникова 6/22/23 4:33PM
Ss needs to predict the information for the sentences as well and
use the words from the text to complete them. Pay attention to
the rules, 1 word only

Anonymous 10/11/23 10:29AM

Read the sentences before and after the gap to understand the
context.Predict the missing word or phrase based on the
context.Be cautious about grammar and word forms (e.g.,
singular/plural, verb tense).

Anonymous 10/12/23 6:39AM

Most of the missing information is facts about the topic, so the
words that you need to write are mostly nouns. Check if the
word is singular or plural in the passage. Remember, the word(s)
you need to write are in the passage. Don't put the information
you read into your own words.

Multiple Choice

4 3
Anonymous 10/15/22 1:46PM
First underline the key words in the questions and use these to
quickly find the part of the passage that you need to read in
more detail (probably not just 1 sentence with the key words).

MariaTrainer 10/20/22 11:48AM

Read ONLY the question. Go to the text. find the answer and
then read the task options.

Anonymous 10/12/23 6:36AM

The statements in each set follow the order of information in the
passage. When you read the passage, you may see some words
or ideas from the statements. These help you to find the relevant
sections. There are two correct answers in each set. However,
you should check all the statements carefully to make sure you
have the right ones. Find reasons why the incorrect statements
are wrong.

TFNG and YNNG

2 5
Anonymous 10/10/22 7:43AM
Read the TFNG statements first very attentively underlining key
words, and only then read the text to know what you're looking
for. I liked what IELTS Liz wrote: NG statements contain info
that is not actually provided in the text, and False statements
provide info that the text actively contradicts. So it's important
to draw this distinction. That's why you need to underline the
contradicting info for False statements and the supporting info
for True statements.

Anonymous 4/24/23 7:31PM

It's important to pay attention to words in the task statements
that express an attitude (seem, suppose, claim, etc.) as well as
adverbs of frequency and pronouns (always, all the time, every,
all of ...). The text may speak about one occasion while the task
will have a statement about a frequent activity. So we don't know
if the thing happens all the time, and should consider this
information as not given.

Юлия Овсянникова 6/22/23 4:17PM

They should read the sentences and underline the key words and
then try to find similar information in the text. After doing this
they need to understand if the information is the same as in the
questions (True) or not (False). For NG what is triky is that
sometimes some part of the question can be in the text, but the
details are missing, it means that the statement is already not
False, but Not Given

Anonymous 10/11/23 10:32AM

Read the question carefully to understand the specific statement
you need to evaluate.Pay attention to words like "true" or "false"
(TFNG) and "yes" or "no" (YNNG) to determine the required
response.Scan the passage to find the exact information or
inference that matches the statement. If the information isn't
found, it's "Not Given."

Anonymous 10/12/23 6:20AM

It's especially important to check carefully whether an answer is
FALSE or NOT GIVEN. If you think the answer is NOT GIVEN,
underline the words and ideas in the statement that aren't in the
passage. Read the rest of the paragraph in the passage quickly to
make sure you haven't missed anything.

Headings

0 4
Anonymous 4/24/23 7:44PM
Pay special attention to the topic sentence (usually the first
sentence of a paragraph) or a combination of the first and the
last sentence in a paragraph. It will help to find the most obious
headings. Then work with the rest based on synonyms. The
IELTS principle seems to be "If you cannot underline an answer,
it is not a correct answer for the question"

Юлия Овсянникова 6/22/23 4:19PM

I'd recommend to look through the headings and then start
working with the paragraphs. Read 1 paragraph - Choose the
heading for it etc.

Anonymous 10/11/23 10:28AM

Quickly scan the headings before reading the passage to get an
idea of the structure. Look for keywords or phrases that are
repeated in both the heading and the text.

Anonymous 10/12/23 6:31AM

When you read the passage, you may see some words or phrases
that appear in the headings. Be careful. The correct heading for
each paragraph uses different words to express the main ideas.
Don't use your own knowledge of the subject to help you choose
the heading. The headings need to report the ideas in the
passage.
