ASSIGNMENT 1 (INDIVIDUAL)
BST255 (BUILDING SURVEYING PRACTICE II)

A survey is the inspection and investigation of the construction and services of a property in
sufficient detail to enable a surveyor to advise what impact the condition and the
circumstances of that property will have upon the client. The purpose of this assignment is
therefore to expand the student's understanding of building defects with relation to the
symptoms, causes and treatments.

The aim and objective of this assignment:

1. To assess common defects, the performance of materials, elements, and services


in buildings.
2. To elaborate the understanding of building performance and failures in building
surveys for various types of defects.
3. To display a confident and responsive verbal presentation and clear written
inspection findings.

TASKS:

You are required to find any buildings in UiTM Perak and provide their locations. Students
are then required to diagnose the defects and the effects below to other elements. The
following building elements are as below:

a) The roof. (Any roof elements)


b) Building Fabrics and Components (Doors, window, ceiling, apron and other finishing
materials)
c) Building structures (column/ beam/ girders/ floors/ stairs/ etc.) (exclude roof)
d) Building services (sanitary/ water supply/ electrical/ mechanical/ fire system/ etc.)
e) External/ Site condition (parking area, driveway, covered carpark, landscape,
compound lighting, perimeter fences, gates, refuse disposal etc.)

Each student is required to find 2 (two) defects and their remedies for each item in a,b,c,d
and e. Your finding shall include but not be limited to defect description, symptoms,
possible causes, prognosis and methods statement (correction methods)
Using the selected case study, each group should prepare a simple report in video format.

Your finding shall include but not be limited to defect description (definition, types),
symptoms, possible causes, prognosis and methods statement. Present your findings
in the form of a slide PowerPoint and video (please give the link of the video in any media.
The duration of the video presentation maximum 10 minutes only. Marks will be given on
clarity, understanding, creativity and presentation each week during fieldwork class. Kindly
present and submit your compilation slide (video) on Week 7.
