Question #1

The US quarter has a mass of 5.67 g and is approximately 1.55 mm thick. (a) How
many quarters would have to be stacked to reach 575 ft, the height of the
Washington Monument? (b) How much would this stack weigh? (c) How much
money would this stack contain? (d) The US national Debt Clock showed the

stacks like the one described would be necessary to pay off this debt?

Question #2

Identify (symbol) and name the following elements or ions:

a) Has 40 protons and 38 electrons

b) Has 80 protons and 78 electrons
c) Has the same number of electrons as krypton, but has a charge of -2
d) Has the same number of electrons as xenon, but has a charge of +2
e) Has a mass number of 128, has 54 electrons and 76 neutrons
f) Has a mass number of 209, has 80 electrons and 126 neutrons

Question #3

Indigo dye (for blue jeans) has a percent composition by mass of 73.27% C, 3.84%
H, 10.68% N and the remainder is oxygen. Its molar mass is 262.3 g/mol. What
are its empirical and molecular formulae?

Question #4

A sample of MgSO4∙ xH2O weighing 8.129 g is heated until all the water from
hydration is driven off. The resulting anhydrous compound, MgSO 4, weighs 3.967 g.
What is the formula of the hydrate (what is x)? (This was not covered in class, but
can be found in the last section of chapter 2)
