1. Which of the following are vector spaces?

(i) R(Q) (ii) Q(R) (iii) R (C ) (iv) C (R) , where

C is complex number, Q is rational number and R is real number.

Answer: (i) and (iv) are vector spaces and (iii) and (iv) are not subspaces.

2. Show that set of all continuous function defined on interval  1,1 such that f (0)  0 is a
vector space over R.
3. Which of the following are subspaces of V  R 2
  
(i) S1  ( x, y)  R 2 : x  y  0. (ii) S2  ( x, y)  R 2 : sin 2 x  sin 2 y  0. 

(iii) S3  ( x, y)  R 2 : sec 2 x  tan 2 x  1. (iv) S  ( x, y) R

Answer : (i) and (iii) are subspaces but (ii) and (iv) are not subspaces.
4. Which of the following are subspaces of V  A22 ( set of all 22 matrices).

(i) Set of all symmetric matrices. (ii) Set of all skew symmetric matrices.

(iii)Set of all matrices with sum of first row is one. (iv) Set of all matrices with det=1.

Answer: (i) and (ii) are subspaces but (iii) and (iv) are not subspaces.

5. Let C 2 [1,1] be the vector space of all functions with continuous second derivative on the
domain [1,1] . Which of the following subsets is a subspace and which one is not.
(i ) W1   f ( x)  C 2 [1,1] : f ( x)  f ( x)  0
(i ) W2   f ( x)  C 2 [1,1] : f ( x)  f ( x)  1
Answer : (i) is subspaces but (ii) is not subspace.

Answer: Does not belong because after making in linear combination, obtained system of
linear equation has no solution.
8. Does the vector u  3 t 2  2 t  1 belongs to subspace of P2 ( R) spanned by the vectors
v1  t 2  t  1, v 2  6t 2  3t  3 and v3  t 2  5t  1 .
Answer: Does not belong because after making in linear combination, obtained system of
linear equation has no solution.

9. Check whether the following sets are linearly independent or not.

(i) (1, 2, 1, 4),(1,0,1,0) and (1, 1,0,1)  R 4 .

(i) t  1, t 2  1,  t 2  2t  1  P2 (R)

Answer: (i) linearly independent. (ii) Linearly dependent.

10. Verify whether the following set of vectors are linearly independent or dependent.
(i) (1, e x , e 2 x , e3 x ) (ii) ( x, cos x,sin x) (iii)(1, x, x 2 , x 3 )
(iv) ( x, x ) (v) ( x 2 , x x ) (vi) (x, x  x 2 , 2 x  x 2 )
Answer: first, second, third, fourth and fifth are LI and (vi) is LD. Use wronskian method.
11. Find the basis and dimension of following spaces over V  A22 (set of all 22 matrices).
(i) Set of symmetric matrices (ii) set of all skew symmetric matrices (iii) set of all matrices
with trace is zero (iv)Set of all matrices with sum of first row and second row are zero.
