Thinks of the ways the English Language is used in Philippine pop culture. What
additional examples of unique expressions in English can you think of that young
Filipinos use in everyday interactions. Give three (3) examples and explain each(at
least in 2-5 sentences).
1. Nosebleed
Sometimes, certain situations can result in nosebleeds. In terms of medicine, dry
air and elevated blood pressure are two common causes of nosebleeds. The term
“nosebleed” has a particular meaning in the Filipino language, especially when it
comes to conversations between English and Filipino speakers, even if the majority
of nosebleeds can be treated at home. When someone who does not speak English
well uses the term “nosebleed” to convey that they are having trouble
understanding or conversing in the language with a fluent speaker. It is often used
in jest, such as “Ay, na no-nosebleed ako sa English mo. Hindi ko maintindihan!”
to lessen the embarrassment of speaking fluently in the language.
2. High blood
The medical definition of “high blood” is not how the term is understood. The
majority of Filipino mothers use this expression to chastise their children, saying
things like, “Hina-high blood ako sa’yo!” This expression is also used in humor;
for example, when someone is getting angry or agitated, a Filipino would bring it
up in the middle of a heated argument to gently tell the angry person to calm down
a little.
3. In fairness
The actual meaning of the phrase is not much different from this. However, this is
more likely to be utilized to make a positive statement about someone or
something that has been discussed in the Filipino context. Furthermore, this can be
connected to the way the words “to be fair” or “actually” are employed in
sentences. These words convey the sense of taking into consideration all relevant
factors in order to render an impartial judgment.
