Topic Title: Features of Academic writing

What is Academic Writing?

Academic writing is any writing done to fulfil a requirement in school. It is also used for
publications like school papers, books, essays, research paper or academic journal that are used by
teacher and researchers or presented at conferences.

What is the main purpose of academic writing?

The most common purposes in academic writing are to persuade, analyse/synthesize, and inform.

What is the importance of academic writing?

Academic writing serves as a tool of communication that conveys acquired knowledge in a specific
field of study. Writing academically will help students analyse, convey understanding, think critically
and focus on technique and style.

Features of Academic Writing:

1. Complexity-It uses more noun-based phrases than verb –phrase .Written texts are shorter and the
language has more subordinate clauses and passives.

2. Formality-academic writing is relatively formal. In an essay you should avoid colloquial words and
expressions such as “several”, ,”many”, ”a lot”,”aint”,”gonna” etc….

3. Precision-in academic writing facts and figures are given precisely.

4. Objectivity-The main emphasis should be on the information that you want to give to the reader
and the arguments you want to make.

5. Explicitness-It is the responsibility of the writer to make it clear to the reader how the various parts
of the text are related.

6. Accuracy- the writer uses vocabulary words with accurate meaning. Most subjects have words with
narrow specific meanings.

7. Responsibility-the writer must be responsible for and must be able to provide evidence and

justifications for any claims you make in writing.

8. Organisation-academic writing is well-organized. It flows from one section to the next in a logical
fashion. A good place to start is the genre of your text.

9.Hedging-this the stance or the strength of the claims of the writing of the author.

10. Planning- It usually takes place after research and evaluation, according to a specific purpose and
plan.

In academic writing always avoid addressing the reader with the second –person pronoun “you”
instead use the impersonal pronoun “one”.

Here is an example of an Essay:

Selection 1
That morning after my teacher came she led me into her room and gave me a doll. The little
blind children at the Perkins Institution had sent it and Laura Bridgman had dressed it; but I did
not know this until afterward. When I had played with it a while ,Miss Sullivan slowly spelled into
my hand the word “d-o-l-l” .I was at once interested in this finger play and tried to limit it .When I
finally succeeded in making the letters correctly ;I was flushed with childish pleasure and pride
..Running downstairs to my mother, I held up my hand and made the letters for doll. I did not
know that I was spelling a word or even that word existed ;I was simply making my fingers go in
monkey –like imitation.

Helen Keller
Note:
 Writers are careful not to make claims that are too strong words like “may”, and “might”.
And writers only include information relevant to the question.
 Do not repeat an idea, use few words as you can without losing its meaning.
 Use grammatical simple sentence.
Example:The dog attacked the man
 The writings should be clear focus on the issue or topic rather than the author’s opinion.
 A proper outline is a must for academic writing, help you formulate your thoughts.
 A formal tone is used. You do not used slang words, jargon, abbreviations or many clichés.
 Use Gerunds(ing form)-present participle or gerunds help to create more complex forms.
Example: Speaking English is necessary

stories, novels, poetry and articles that are creatively written.

CHARACTERISTICS OF LITERARY TEXTS

experience to the reader.
2. FREE STYLE – the author has the free will to choose the form, style
and tone in this type of text. (It does not follow any structure.)
3. USE OF LITERARY FIGURES – It made use of literary figures such
as metaphors, onomatopoeia and others to enrich the writings and
make them more attractive to the readers.
4. SUBJECTIVITY – it usually addresses a topic from an original and
striking point of view.
5. LANGUAGE USED- A literary text can afford to break with grammar
rules depending on how the author wants to be defined.
6. READ for ENTERTAINMENT- A person reads a literary work simply
for entertainment purposes.
7. FICTION – they tell unreal stories that are born in the mind of the
author, so they will convey their particular way of seeing the world.
8. CREDIBLE – although the story that is told is not real, it is credible
(believable).
9. ETERNITY – Literary texts do not have expiration date, they persist
over time and are transmitted from generation to generation.
