Module 3 Managing Lessons

Workshop 1 of 10
What is lesson management?
Welcome to the PNF
Secondary Remote
Teacher Training
Programme
My name is Noriangel
I am your online Trainer.

We will be working together on

the live Telegram sessions.
In Workshop 1 you will:
• expand your understanding of all
the factors that make up lesson
management
The Pre-Workshop Task should take
approximately 60 minutes.

There is an activity to share with your

Trainer which is worth 1 mark towards
your module assessment.
Learner journals are great tools for both
Learner journal learners and teachers. They help you to
record your thoughts and learning points
and go back and reflect on them with the
benefit of time and experience.

You can use a copy book and pen, notes in

your mobile or record voice voice.
Organise yourself in any way that works for
you.
Learner journal need to be honest and
should include what you felt went wrong as
well as your success and your
understanding of why you think something
worked.

4. Match
Here are some more topics we will be covering in this module:
• establishing a positive classroom environment

• student motivation

• interaction patterns

• giving effective instructions

• correction

• monitoring

• teacher reflection

Go back to the pictures on slides 8 and 9. Can you match any of the
topics here and on the previous slide with the pictures? 13
Check

Picture 1 could be an example of a positive classroom

environment.
Picture 2 could be teacher reflection.
Picture 3 could be monitoring.
Picture 4 could be an example of an interaction pattern.
Picture 5 could be an example of (a problem with) pace.
Picture 6 could be an example of timing (the teacher setting a
time limit).

14
5. Think and write

Here are three examples of common lesson management

problems.
Why does the teacher have these problems? Think back to the
topics on the previous slides.

1. Students are whispering to each other rather than beginning

the task.

15
2. When students work in groups, one student does all the work
and the others just chat in their home language.

16
3. The teacher finds that she never successfully meets the main
aim of her lesson.

17
6. Compare your ideas with these possible reasons.

1. The teacher has given poor instructions and /or not

checked understanding of instructions and the
students don’t know what to do.
The teacher is speaking too quickly or using over-
complex English and the students don’t understand
the instructions.
The teacher is not monitoring the beginning of the
activity to check learners are on task.
18
Compare your ideas with these possible reasons.

2. The groups are too big and encourage some students

to disengage.
The teacher has not assigned roles to the group
members.
The teacher has not made the use of L1 policy clear to
the learners e.g. you can use L1 to explain tasks and
language to each other, but not for chatting!
The teacher is not monitoring the group work closely.
19
Compare your ideas with these possible reasons.

3. The teacher is not following the times on her plan.

The teacher is not giving the learners time limits for
activities.
Time limits for activities are too generous or inflexible!
The teacher or the learners spend too much time on less
important activities e.g. the lead-in.

20
7. Write

Now go back to the definition of lesson management you

wrote at the beginning of this session.
Review it and rewrite it as necessary.
This will be one mark for your assessment.

21
Activity 7 (rewritten definition) to
be shared with your Trainer on
Telegram 1 mark
towards your
module
assessment
Thank you.
I’m looking forward to
seeing you at the
Workshop 1 session.
