information system that deals with nursing aspects,
particularly the maintenance of the nursing record.
• Evolution of technology “technology explosion” Nursing
Informatics to include the application of:
• Computers
• Technology
• Nursing science to the management and processing of
nursing data, information and knowledge
MEANING
– Wide- Area Networks (WAN): Are links to the outside world. They connect computer users to
other users and systems through the telephone company‟s communication infrastructure. WAN
support voice, data and image transmission.
– Local- Area Network (LAN): Are used to connect user‟s within a local, somewhat defined,
geographic area such as a building or closely grouped set of buildings.
– Wireless networks connect information system: Uses computer and communication hardware
using wireless transmission of data, example electrocardiogram and cell phones.
NURSING INFORMATICS IN HOSPITAL
1) Storage of Patient Data
2) Computerized Presentations:
3) Teaching nurses through Simulations.
4) Computerized Self
5) Medical Data Such mammoth databases are known as Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and
Electronic Health Records (EHR).

•Telemedicine:
•Electronic Medical Records (EMR):
Increased efficiency:
Improved documentation:
Improved quality of care:
Improved security:
Reduced documentation expenses:
Advantages -NIS
Examples of Nursing Information Systems
• A System (EmSTAT) at Hennepin County Medical Center (Minnaeapolis,
Minnesota) improves communication, facilitates continuity of care and decreases
redundancy in documentation.
