1. A sheet of copper is stretched biaxially in the xy-plane. If the strains in the sheet are
−3 −3
ϵ x =0.40 ×10 ∧ϵ y =0.30 × 10 , determine σ x ∧¿ σ y. Use E=110 GPa∧υ=0.35 .

2. The initially square element of a material is deformed as shown. Determine the shear strain of the element and
the normal strains of the diagonals AC and BD.

3. A reinforced concrete column 200 mm in diameter is designed to carry an axial compressive load of 320 kN.
Determine the required cross-sectional area of the reinforcing steel if the allowable stresses are 6 MPa for
concrete and 120 MPa for steel. Use Eco =14 GPa∧E st =200 GPa .

4. An initially rectangular element of material is deformed as shown in the figure (note that the deformation is
greatly exaggerated). Calculate the normal strains ϵ x and ϵ y , and the shear strain γ for the element.
