Drugs for PLAB 2 Prescriptions - Rups’ Cheat Sheet

1 Clarithromycin - CAP 591 PO 500 mg BD x 7 days Stop statins for the duration of Clarithromycin
Do not prescribe if the patient is allergic to Azithromycin
Cefalexin PO 500 mg BD x 7 days

2 Doxycycline - COPD 623 PO 200 mg OD x 1 day If Q asks to prescribe a maintenance dose, only give 100
100 mg OD x 4 days mg OD for 4 days
Total 5 days

3a Apixaban - PE/DVT 137 PO 10 mg BD x 7 days Do not prescribe Aspirin as it will increase the risk of

3b Apixaban - Stroke 137 PO 5 mg BD


Prophylaxis/AF 2.5 mg BD Half the dose is to be given if 2 of the following criteria
are met
Age > 80 years
Weight < 60 kg
Sr. Creat > 133 micromol/litre
Or
Creatinine clearance 15-29 mL/min

4 Atenolol 169 PO 50mg OD If eGFR 15-35 ml/min/1.73m2


25mg OD If eGFR <15 ml/min/1.73m2

5 Rivaroxaban - DVT 141 PO 15 mg BD x 21 days Take with food 16/5-29/5-5/6


Treatment 20 mg OD x 6 months Do not prescribe Aspirin with it

6 Alendronate 737 PO 70 mg Once a week

7 Vancomycin - MSRA 587 IV As per chart Check levels on the 2nd day. Loading + Maintenance

Children (Maintenance)
First 10 kg = 4 ml/kg/hr
Next 10 kg = 2 ml/kg/hr
Next kgs = 1 ml/kg/hr

20 Meropenem - Acute IV 500 mg TDS x 5 days If an allergy to Penicillin, it can be given


Pancreatitis
If anaphylaxis to Penicillin, give Gentamycin 1.5mg/kg

1. Please verify the dosages and page numbers with the newest edition of the BNF
2. Open the BNF in the station to the page of the drug if possible.
3. Practise all prescriptions at least twice to build speed and confidence.
