QUICK-REFERENCE CARD
MLA 9TH EDITION
BY ORDER IN CITATION

SOURCE Can be a birth name, pseudonym, a group


of people, or an organization. A birth name
Author. is listed "last name, first name." If there are
several authors, only the first author is
listed by their last name first.

Title of Source. Can be replaced with a description if there


is no formal title.

CONTAINER Includes albums, anthologies, apps,


databases, exhibits, journals, magazines,
newspapers, television series, websites, and
Title of Container, any work in which another work is
contained.
People, groups, or organizations that play a
Contributor, role in the work but are not the primary
creator(s).

Check for different versions or editions in


Version, the title page, "About" page, or other page
with information about the work.

Always replace roman numerals and spelled


Number, out numbers with arabic numerals and an
abbreviated identifier (vol. 1, no. 2, etc.)

Can include the publisher of a book, the


Publisher, agency, broadcaster, institution, network, or
theatre that distributes a work.

Can include a time stamp, day, month,


Publication Date, season, year, or range of years.

Can include page number, page range, DOI,


permalink, URL, numbering system
Location. formatted by the source, or physical
location where the work was observed.
