- Virgil’s Aeneid: epic on the legendary origins of Rome
- Constantine
- The “decline and fall” of the Roman Empire - Causes debated by historians for many
hundreds of years (outer forces, such as shrinking trade, attacks and invasions, vs. inner
forces, such as disease, jobless masses, taxes, corruption and violence, rival religions
and ethnic groups, weak emperors)

Building endurance and comprehension

The ultimate goal for each student is to be capable of reading an entire chapter
independently with complete comprehension of the subject matter. We have a balanced
approach of scaffolding our instruction and also providing opportunities for students to
practise reading longer passages entirely on their own. Students are expected to provide
their written responses using full sentences and quoting evidence in the text to justify their
thinking.
Spelling:
For the remainder of the year, we will be focusing on morphology and etymology. This will
heavily include prefixes and suffixes, and how they can adjust the meaning of a Latin root
or base word. Understanding the structure of words supports students in building on
vocabulary, the spelling of words, meaning, and the history of words.

When making meaning of words, we read from right to left.

For example:
In the present, to carry something out of.

Maths:

The following topics have been/will be covered in maths this term:

- Number patterns; including patterns of fractions and decimals

- Expressing improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa
- Finding and measuring unknown angles
- Multiplying and Dividing fractions and decimals
- Converting time between 12R and 24HR time, as well as calculating duration of
time
- Transformations of 2D shapes, including translations, reflections, rotations, symmetry
and enlargement
- Using a cartesian plane to locate and plot points on a map
- Converting units of volume and capacity
- Money and finance (budgeting)

To best support your child this term in Math, we recommend practising and reciting their
timetables every day at home. You might like to practise in the car on the way to
school/sport training etc.

Level Activities

Year 5: The Year 5 students will be focusing on a Shark Tank Project, in which students will
investigate marketing, design, budgeting, and profit building. Students will work within
groups to design a need/want for the school community and present their project to the
cohort.
The Year 5 students are also beginning to develop their 2024 leadership speeches. The
following are the leadership positions for 2024. School captains, Student Voice and Agency
Leaders, Sustainability Leaders, Cultural Leaders, Sport Leaders and Inclusivity leaders.

The students will be writing one speech addressing the following prompts:

1. In previous years, how have you demonstrated the CHPS school values of respect,
responsibility and cooperation?
2. In your role as school captain, how will you encourage and support students at
CHPS to build on the school values?
3. Why do you want to be a school leader at CHPS, and what will it mean to you if you
are successful?
4. In the roles that you have nominated, what impact would you have in this role.

Year 6: The Year 6 students have been working on their Graduation scrapbooks. They will
be writing their graduation speech in the coming weeks and filming it as a voice recording
to play on the night of graduation. Thank-you for your support in purchasing items for the
Scrapbooks and sending us photos of your child’s journey at CHPS.

The Year 6 students are starting to get excited about the end-of-year celebration activities,
which include Gumbuya World, a bike/scooter ride and Graduation.

Thank you for your continued support.
