School Cabangan High School Grade Level Grade 8

GRADE 8 DAILY LESSON LOG Teacher John Mark Arel Celosa Learning Area Science

Teaching date and time Quarter Third

I. OBJECTIVES

A. Content Standards The learners demonstrate understanding of how cells divide to produce new cells

The learners demonstrate understanding of meiosis as one of the processes producing genetic variation of the
Mendelian Pattern of inheritance

B. Performance Standards The learners should be able to report on the importance of variation in plant and breeding.

C. Learning Competencies Compare mitosis and meiosis and their role in the cell division cycle (S8LT-IVd-16)

Explain the significance of meiosis in maintaining the chromosome number (S8LT-IVe-17)

At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:

1. Explain meiosis terms of their cell division process

2. Arrange the stages of meiosis
3. Explain the importance of meiosis

Prayer

Let us all stand, and seek guidance of our Almighty God. I would like
to ask Maria to lead the prayer.

Dear God,……..Amen!
Greetings

“Good morning class!”

Good morning teacher JM!

Securing the cleanliness

Before you take your seats, kindly arrange and align your chairs
before sitting.

Class monitor, may I know who is/are the absentees for today?

ELICIT (The class monitor will stand and tell who are the absentees)

A. Reviewing previous lesson/presenting new lesson

Review

Since we are now done with mitosis, let’s review some of important
matters about our lesson last time.

Q1. Who can enumerate the stages of Mitosis?

A1. Interphase-Prophase-Metaphase-Anaphase-Telophase and Cytokinesis.

Q2. In what stage of the cell division that cell grows in size and
replicates its DNA to prepare for cell division?
A2. Interphase.

Q3. In what stage of cell division that the chromosomes (genetic

material) condense (coil tightly) and the nucleolus disappears.

A3. Prophase
Q4. How about the stage in cell division when the chromosomes
align in the center of the cell and attach to microtubules in
preparation to split apart?

Q5. What happened to stage of cell division during Anaphase? A4. Metaphase
A5. Chromatids separate and move to opposite ends of the cell. This stage
ensures that each cell contains identical chromosomes after splitting.
Q6. How about in Telophase?

A6. Two new nuclei form around each set of chromosomes. Chromosomes
Q7. In what stage of mitosis when the cytoplasm of the parent cell decondense and the cells begin to split from each other.
splits to form two identical daughter cells.

A7. Cytokinesis
ENGAGE

B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson the teacher will play the

The Meiosis Song and told the student to take notes information they
might use in the lesson proper.

A. Presenting examples/instances of the new lesson

Analyze this picture and try to see the differences in these kids
considering that they are siblings.
Q1. What are their differences?

Q2. Have you also noticed that you and your siblings have
differences though you came from same parent?

A1. Their eye color, hair color, skin complexion.

Q3. Can anyone share their differences compare to their brothers or

sisters?
A2. (answers may vary)

Today we will find the answers for that, let us first have this activity.
A3. (answers may vary)

D. Discussing new concepts and practicing skills #1

Activity Sheet -MEIOSIS

Instruction: Given the image and description of stages of meiosis try to

copy the act of chromosome/ sister chromatid or tetrads in the selected
stage.

Students will present their performance in front of the class.

Guide questions

1. Why is it important to for cells to produce new cells in meiosis?

2. Based on the activity, what do you think is the purpose of

meiosis?

3. In your opinion, what makes meiosis important to humanity?

Explain and Elaborate

EXPLAIN

F. Developing Mastery

Why is it important to for cells to produce new cells?

Meiosis is important because it ensures that all organisms produced via

sexual reproduction contain the correct number of chromosomes. Meiosis
also produces genetic variation by way of the process of recombination.
What is the purpose of meiosis?
The purpose of meiosis is to create gametes for sexual production with half
What makes meiosis important to humanity? the genetic material of the parent cells. In meiosis, four haploid daughter
cells containing half as many chromosomes as the parent cell are created.
These germ cells can then join during sexual reproduction to produce a
diploid zygote.

In humans, during meiosis sperm cells and egg cells are produced. Humans
need meiosis to produce new off-springs. Meiosis is important for three main
reasons: it allows sexual reproduction of diploid organisms, it enables
genetic diversity, and it aids the repair of genetic defects.

G. Making generalizations and abstractions about the lesson.

A type of cell division where a single cell divides twice and produces
four daughter cells with half the amount of genetic material (sex
cells).
Again, what is meiosis?
What are the stages for meiosis? Meiosis makes sure that all organisms produced via sexual reproduction
Lets look at the stages for Meiosis and to make it more exciting, contain the correct number of chromosomes - half from each parent.
provided an coin size images of the stages kindly raise your answer
after every definition of a given stage.

Prophase 1
(student will raise their images and label it at the back for their references)
The chromosomes condense and the nucleolus breaks down. As
chromosomes move around, crossing over happens - this means
genetic material can be exchanged
Metaphase 1

The chromosomes align in pairs in the center of the cell. Random

assortment occurs - this means that chromosome pairs line up
randomly.

Anaphase 1

Chromosome pairs separate and move to opposite ends of the cell.

This ensures each cell contains half the number of chromosomes
(haploid).

Telophase 1

Two new nuclei form around each set of chromosomes. The

cytoplasm splits and two (haploid) daughter cells are formed.

Prophase 2

Phase 2 happens to allow 4 haploid sex cells (sperm and egg cells)
to be created. The chromosomes condense and the nucleolus
breaks in both cells.
Metaphase 2

The chromosomes align single file in the center of the cell. This
occurs to ensure sister chromatids separate in the next stage.

Telophase 2

Four new nuclei form around each set of chromosomes. The

cytoplasm’s split and four (haploid) daughter cells are formed.
