How to Learn New Piano Repertoire in Unit 3
1 LISTEN and SING - Before you learn to play a new song, first become familiar with it by
listening and singing along with the Listening Album.
2 READ - Look at the music on the page and point to each note while trying one or more of the
following: • Sing the rhythm words
• Identify the steps, skips and repeats
• Sing the solfège
• Sing the letter names
3 FIND YOUR PIANO POSTURE- Using correct piano posture is very important for developing
great habits and playing your best.
4 PLAY - Play the song while singing the lyrics. For an extra challenge, try singing the rhythm
words, solfège, or letter names. Repeat until you can play with confidence and no missed
notes.
5 ADDING CHORDS - Once the melody is mastered, work on adding chords.

Expert Tips for Practicing

SINGING
Mr. Hoffman encourages you to sing along while you practice your
songs in this book. Singing is one of the best ways to develop your
musical ear. It will also help you hear and correct your own mistakes.

MEMORY
You are encouraged to not look at the page while playing! Playing
from memory helps develop your ear and musical memory. It’s OK to
refer to the page for guidance, if needed, but then close your book
and try it again from memory.

REVIEW
Once a song is mastered, review it every day by playing along with the
Practice Album backing tracks. For an extra challenge, try transposing
or playing the melody with your LH and chords with your RH. As you
learn new songs, continue to review all the songs you’ve already
learned from Units 2 and 3.
