the week. Vocabulary refers to the set of words that a person understands and uses in a particular language.
It encompasses the entire range of words, from common everyday terms to specialized or
technical terminology. Having a rich and varied vocabulary is essential for effective
communication, as it allows individuals to express themselves clearly and comprehend others’
messages accurately. In the context of language learning, building a strong vocabulary is a key
component of achieving proficiency in a foreign language.
Teaching vocabulary is crucial in foreign language instruction because it forms the foundation for
effective communication. When students have a strong grasp of vocabulary, they can express
themselves more accurately and understand others better in the target language.
Receptive vocabulary encompasses words that individuals understand when they encounter them,
such as when listening or reading. On the other hand, productive vocabulary refers to words that
individuals can actively use when speaking or writing.
Implicit vocabulary presents a disadvantage as it may not equip students with the ability to use
words in real-life contexts, potentially limiting their communicative skills.
There are various types of vocabulary, including basic vocabulary, specialized vocabulary related
to specific fields (such as business or technology), and idiomatic expressions, among others.
When considering breadth and depth of vocabulary, breadth relates to the quantity of words a
person knows in a language, while depth pertains to the detailed knowledge and nuances of those
words
