The topic we would like to introduce to you today is: "League of Legends: An
Overview of the Most Popular Esports Game". As you all know, video games have
become a huge part of modern culture and entertainment, but esports have taken this to
a whole new level, and one of the most popular esports today is League of Legends.
II. Main contents
2.1 Concepts (This part is presented by Vu Duc Manh)
- Introduction to E-sport: Esports, short for electronic sports, is a form of
competition using video games. Esports often takes the form of organized, multiplayer
video game competitions, particularly between professional players, individually or as
teams.
- Introduction to League of Legends (LoL): League of Legends (LoL), commonly
referred to as League, is a 2009 multiplayer online battle arena video game developed
and published by Riot Games. Inspired by Defense of the Ancients, a custom map for
Warcraft III, Riot's founders sought to develop a stand-alone game in the same genre.
Since its release in October 2009, League has been free-to-play and is monetized
through purchasable character customization. The game is available for Microsoft
Windows and macOS.

4
+ Overview: Mechanics, objectives, gameplay elements: League of Legends is a
multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game in which the player controls a character
("champion") with a set of unique abilities from an isometric perspective. As of 2023,
there are over 160 champions available to play. Over the course of a match, champions
gain levels by accruing experience points (XP) through killing enemies. Items can be
acquired to increase champions' strength, and are bought with gold, which players
accrue passively over time and earn actively by defeating the opposing team's minions,
champions, or defensive structures. Two teams of five players compete to destroy the
opposing team's "Nexus", which is guarded by the enemy champions and defensive
structures known as "turrets". The regions in between the lanes are collectively known
as the "jungle", which is inhabited by "monsters" that, like minions, respawn at regular
intervals. Like minions, monsters provide gold and XP when killed. Another, more
powerful class of monster resides within the river that separates each team's jungle.
These monsters require multiple players to defeat and grant special abilities to their
slayers' team.
+ Roles and champions available in the game: There are 167 champions in LoL
since the last update of the game and they are divided into the following 5 basic roles:
Top lane: The top lane is one of the two solo lanes in League of Legends and is
perfect for players who enjoy a good old one-versus-one brawl. Because of its isolated
nature, Top Laners generally want to go down two paths. The first is to try and
generate massive leads with fighters and the second is to sit tight and then show up big
on tanks in teamfights where they can soak damage and provide plenty of Crowd
Control.
Jungle: Jungle is arguably the most unique role in League of Legends as instead of
heading to one of the three lanes, the Jungler clears neutral monsters in the jungle and
looks to influence different areas of the map. One of the things that Junglers can do is
gank lanes, or in other words, try and surprise an enemy laner and kill them with a
numbers advantage.

5
Mid lane: Mid Lane has always been a crucial role in League of Legends, as from its
central position Mid Laners can influence the entire map if they want, or simply scale
and be a major carry later on. One of the goals in mid lane is to hold onto the tower for
as long as possible because fallen mid lane towers open up the map for the enemy.
Bot lane: Bot Laner is usually an Attack Damage Carry, more commonly known as
an ADC. The main aim of a bot laner is to get as much farm as possible in lane, and
ideally enter the mid and late game stronger than their counterpart.
Support: Support champions come in a variety of forms from enchanters who excel
at healing, shielding, and otherwise keeping allies alive, to engage tanks who want to
set up plays and everything in between.
2.2 Situation (This part is presented by Lai Quynh Nga)

a. Current state of the game

League of Legends is an electronic game falling under the genre of real-time
multiplayer online strategy (MOBA). This game has become a global cultural
phenomenon, with millions of players participating from over 200 different countries
and territories. League of Legends is not just an entertainment game; it has evolved
into a professional esports, with international tournaments held annually, attracting
millions of viewers worldwide. According to Riot's statistics as of 2023, there are up to
180 million accounts regularly logging into the game, not counting the number of
accounts created since the game's release.
The 2023 World Championship of League of Legends took place at Gocheok Sky
Dome in Seoul with the theme "THE GRIND. THE GLORY." The finals between T1
and LNG Esports drew over 3 million simultaneous viewers at one point (excluding
China), marking one of the largest viewership milestones in the history of any esports
quarterfinals worldwide. All four quarter final matches in the 2023 World
Championship recorded 23 million viewing hours, with an average viewer count
increasing by 43.4% compared to the previous season. Moreover, the finals between T1
and WBG reached over 6.4 million viewers, making it the most-watched professional
esports event of all time, surpassing the previous record held by the Free Fire World

6
Series 2021 in Singapore with 5.4 million viewers. With these achievements, the
League of Legends World Championship 2023 became the third esports event globally
to attract over 5 million views.
In Vietnam, the tournament has gained significant attention from fans, even though
both representatives, GAM Esports and Team Whales, were eliminated early in the
qualifiers. The Viewing Party event for the finals, organized by VCS (Vietnam
Championship Series) in collaboration with Youtube Gaming on November 19,
attracted more than 3200 viewers at two locations in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
Notably, 1,400 tickets for the finals were sold out within an hour of opening,
demonstrating the strong influence of this tournament in Vietnam.
Riot Games' esports has proven successful in reaching a young audience and
establishing a scalable sponsorship business model. Riot, through its unique
sponsorship approach, aims not only for profitability but also to collaborate with
suitable brands to provide exciting experiences for players (e.g., the collaboration to
create Louis Vuitton League of Legends skins).

b. Updated version
The latest version of League of Legends in 2024 introduces several new features:
 Changes to gameplay: Mythic items will have their power reduced and their
effects simplified, aiming to increase flexibility and balance for champions. Support
items will be enhanced and diversified to create more choices and playstyles for this
role.
 Changes to game characters: Void monsters will appear more frequently in
Summoner's Rift, providing new challenges and rewards for players.
 Changes to graphics and sound: Champions, items, structures, and monsters will
be revamped with more beautiful and high-quality graphics and sound. Older
champions will be updated in appearance and skills to fit the modern era.
 Content changes: New champions, skins, and events will be regularly
introduced, offering fresh and diverse experiences for players. Famous skin lines such

7
as Dragonmancers, PROJECT, K/DA, and Star Guardian will have additional new
members.

c. Players’ reaction
Before these updates, fan opinions were divided into two streams: supporters and
opposers:
+ Supporters: They believe that the updates and changes to the game are necessary
and reasonable, aiming to enhance balance, diversity, and the overall appeal of the
game. They feel that the game becomes fresher, more exciting, and challenging. They
also commend the improvements in graphics, sound, and content of the game.
+ Opponents: They argue that the updates and changes to the game are unnecessary
and disruptive, altering too much of what was beloved and familiar in the game. They
feel the game becomes unpleasant, boring, and unfair. They also criticize the bugs,
instability, and lack of transparency in the game.

b. Disadvantages to players (This part is presented by Nguyen Huu Nam)

Playing League of Legends not only affects the physical health but also the mental
and psychological health of the player. One of the biggest harms of playing this game
is the addiction it causes. Players can easily fall into a state of addiction, spending
hours every day on the game at the expense of other activities in daily life, such as
working, studying, or socializing. This leads to imbalance in life and can cause
isolation. Playing League of Legends effect is physical and mental. Physical effects are
sitting for a long time in front of a computer screen can cause back pain, neck pain,
shoulder pain and eye pain due to lack of movement and eye strain when playing
games for long periods of time. In addition, spending too much time in front of a
computer screen or mobile device playing games can cause health problems such as

10
reducing vision, or causing problems about weight due to lack of physical activity.
Furthermore, playing games also affects mental. Playing too much League of Legends
can cause tension, stress, lack of sleep and a feeling of fatigue due to constant
psychological tension. Feeling of inferiority when losing in a game can affect self-
confidence and optimism in daily life. Spending too much time on games can affect
social relationships with family, friends and colleagues due to lack of time for direct
communication and interaction.
Playing League of Legends can also affect a player's social relationships. Players
may become lonely or lose face-to-face communication skills due to spending too
much time in virtual spaces, chatting and interacting with other players, instead of
interacting with people around them in real life. international.
Playing League of Legends can create a toxic community for a number of reasons:
The first, highly competitive: League of Legends is a competitive game where players
must work in teams to achieve the goal of victory. High competition can lead to
pressure and stress, causing some players to become aggressive and critical of
teammates when they make mistakes. Some players may become aggressive and sulky,
blame teammates, and even use vulgar or violent language to express their frustration.
This leads to a stressful and unhealthy communication environment, making players
feel uncomfortable and unsafe.
The second, uncontrollability: Due to the online nature of the game, controlling
player behavior becomes difficult. Some players may display toxic behavior such as
insults, criticism, or disruption without being held accountable for their actions.
When players spend too much time on this game, they can become bitter, irritable
and upset when encountering unsatisfactory situations. This can lead to angry reactions
and uncontrolled interactions with other players, creating a negative cycle in the game
environment. Additionally, feelings of confidence and arrogance can also increase
feelings of chaos and tension in the community. Some players can appear arrogant and
intimidating to opponents or teammates, causing an uncomfortable and unpleasant

11
environment for other players. The lack of control and management on the part of the
game developer also contributes to the creation of a toxic community.
Finally, community culture: If some players show negative behavior without being
punished, this can create a negative cycle that spreads in the community, creating a
toxic environment. In addition, the League of Legends gaming community can also
become toxic due to lack of information and understanding. When players do not
clearly understand how to play, tactics, or how to interact with teammates, they can
become stressed and prone to conflict. Finally, the influence of other toxic players can
also spread and create a negative cycle in the community. Judging, criticizing, or
insulting others not only affects the spirit of the victim but also spreads to the entire
gaming community. And failure to effectively handle aggressive and abusive behavior
on the part of players can make the playing environment unhealthy and risky.
To minimize toxic communities, it is important to create measures to control
negative behavior and encourage respect and support for each other in the game.

2.5 Examples

a.Tournaments (This part is presented by Nguyen Thi Mai)

The League of Legends tournaments are famous and have different scales, from
small regional tournaments for team competition to large tournaments that gather teams
from all over the world.
On an international level, the first and most important event is the League of
Legends World Championship (LOL Worlds). The League of Legends World
Championship, often abbreviated as "Worlds," is an annual esports tournament
organized by Riot Games, the creator of League of Legends. Established in 2011,
Worlds brings together the best teams from around the globe to compete for the title of
world champion and the prestigious Summoner's Cup.
The tournament typically features teams from various regions, including North
America, Europe, China, Korea, and more, battling through a series of group stages,
knockout rounds, and ultimately a grand final. T1 is the current 2023 League of
Legends World Championship winner. With millions of viewers tuning in online and
in-person attendance at venues worldwide, Worlds has become one of the most
anticipated events in the esports calendar, showcasing top-tier gameplay, intense
rivalries, and unforgettable moments for fans and players alike.

world for the game League of Legends, hosted annually by Riot Games since 2015.

and summer splits of various regional leagues.
The tournament brings together the top-performing teams from different regions,
allowing them to compete on a global stage. MSI features a unique format that includes
group stages, playoffs, and culminating in a final match to determine the champion.
Much like Worlds, MSI attracts a global audience with its high-stakes matches and
serves as a platform for teams to showcase their skills and strategies against the best
competition from around the world. In the finals of MSI 2023, two teams from China

15
competed, with JD Gaming defeating Bilibili Gaming with a 3-1 score and claiming

was originally reserved for traditional sports, if at the Asiad 2018, League of Legends
was one of the six Esports making its debut as a demonstration sport, then by the Asiad
2023, League of Legends had become an official medal sport.
In the group stage of the League of Legends event at the Asiad 2023, 15 countries
from Southeast Asia, Central and South Asia, East Asia, and West Asia are
participating. The tournament format consists of dividing teams equally into four
groups. Four teams with the highest results from the Road to Asian tournament are

2.6 Solutions (This part is presented by Le Tran My)
League of Legends (LoL) is a widely popular game, but its immersive nature can
lead to various physical and mental health issues if not managed properly. It's crucial to
address these concerns to ensure the well-being of players within the community.

a. Physical Health Risks

Sitting for extended periods during gaming sessions can result in numerous health
problems, including back pain, neck pain, and weight gain. The sedentary lifestyle
associated with gaming contributes to the global obesity epidemic, with the
Vietnamese gaming community significantly affected. To mitigate these risks, the
following strategies can be implemented:
+ Encourage Physical Activity: Integrate short breaks for stretching or light exercises
between gaming sessions to alleviate muscle strain and promote blood circulation.
+ Ergonomic Awareness: Educate players about proper posture and ergonomics to
minimize the risk of developing musculoskeletal issues. Investing in ergonomic
gaming setups can also provide long-term benefits.
+ Healthy Lifestyle Promotion: Advocate for a balanced lifestyle that includes
regular physical activity, nutritious diet choices, and sufficient rest. Organize
community events or challenges focused on fitness and well-being.

b. Mental Health Concerns

Excessive gaming can take a toll on mental well-being, leading to stress, fatigue,
sleep deprivation, and social isolation. These issues can impact overall quality of life
and even affect work or academic performance. To address mental health challenges
associated with LoL, the following measures are recommended:

18
+ Promote Mindfulness and Stress Management: Provide resources and guidance on
stress-relief techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or mindfulness
practices to help players cope with gaming-related stress.
+ Encourage Balanced Playtime: Emphasize the importance of moderation and
setting boundaries when it comes to gaming. Encourage players to allocate time for
other activities, hobbies, and social interactions to maintain a healthy balance in their
lives.
+ Foster Supportive Community: Create a supportive environment where players
feel comfortable discussing mental health issues without fear of stigma. Establish peer
support groups or online forums where individuals can share their experiences and seek
advice or encouragement from others.

c. Addressing toxic community behavior

Toxicity within the LoL community can stem from various factors, including high
competitiveness, lack of understanding, and negative influence from other players.
Tackling these issues requires a multifaceted approach:
+ Promote Sportsmanship and Respect: Emphasize the importance of good
sportsmanship and respectful behavior towards fellow players, regardless of the
outcome of the game. Encourage positive communication and constructive feedback.
+ Education and Training: Provide educational resources, tutorials, and guides to
help players improve their game knowledge, skills, and teamwork abilities. Foster a
learning-oriented environment where players can grow and develop together.
+ Community Moderation and Enforcement: Implement strict guidelines and
