Faulty Computer and Networks Systems

Objectives
You should be able to identify faulty computer and networks systems at the end of this lesson.

The use of computer and network systems in the workplace helps in completing a job or a task
in a faster and more efficient way. Although computer systems are thoroughly checked and
inspected before being deployed and the network systems are checked regularly, faults and
errors can still be experienced. The personnel from the IT department, especially the computer
technicians must be able to identify these faults so that proper actions can be conducted.

Listed below are some of the most common computer systems fault and their probable causes:
There are different ways of determining if a computer or network system is faulty. One is called
reactive, in which a fault can only be identified once it was already experienced by the end-user
or by anyone who is using the computer or network system. The other method is known as
proactive wherein a series of tests is conducted on both the computer and network systems to
determine whether a fault or error is present but has not shown any symptoms yet.

Faults in computer and network systems must be determined as soon as possible. Failure to
know these faults would result in failure to perform the specific actions needed. Maintenance
and repair procedures must be done immediately to address the faulty computer systems and
network.

Q1

Single Answer

Question
Which of the following statements is true?

Correct answer

Expensive equipment are free from any faults

Faults can be neglected from time to time
Only substandard computer systems experience faults
Thoroughly inspected computer systems can also be faulty

Points1
Explanation
All computer systems, whether expensive or substandard, even if they are thoroughly inspected
are not free from experiencing any faults which must not be neglected.

Q2

Single Answer

Question
What is the usual cause of a computer system the persistently reboots?

Correct answer

Faulty cable
Incomplete installation
Insufficient RAM
Overheated CPU

Points1
Explanation
This means that the CPU may be overloaded or improper cooling is applied to it. Restarting or
shutting down is the computer’s way to cool down the CPU.

Q3

Single Answer

Question
What fault can be caused by an inadequate main memory?

Correct answer

No connectivity
Persistent reboots
Sluggish performance
System crash

Points1
Explanation
An inadequate main memory may cause a computer system to be sluggish because it cannot
handle all the temporary data that is used by all running applications.

Q4

Single Answer

Question
Software crashes are caused by installation files that are ______________.

Correct answer

altered
compressed
corrupted
extended

Points1
Explanation
A software that is not completely installed or those that contains corrupted installation files are
most likely to crash from time to time.

Q5

Single Answer

Question
What is the probable cause of an unresponsive peripheral?

Correct answer

Corrupted files
Insufficient RAM
Missing system drivers
Overloaded CPU

Points1
Explanation
Although computer systems have plug and play technology, some of the peripherals require
the installation of the system drivers in order to fully use a peripheral.

Q6

Single Answer

Question
What type of IP addressing can cause duplication?

Correct answer

Automatic addressing
Dynamic addressing
Reserved addressing
Static addressing

Points1
Explanation
This method requires a technician to manually assign IP addresses to clients, which may lead to
duplication.

Q7
Single Answer

Question
Aside from broken data cables or loose connectors, what can cause failure of connection
among wired computer systems?

Correct answer

Corrupted installation
Faulty NIC
Insufficient RAM
Overheated CPU

Points1
Explanation
If cable and connectors are in good condition, a faulty network interface card may cause a
computer system to fail in establishing connection to the network.

Q8

Single Answer

Question
Aside from incompatible channels and frequencies, what could prevent a wireless client to
connect to the network?

Correct answer

Broken cables
Faulty NIC
Strict firewall settings
Weak signal strength

Points1
Explanation
Most computer systems fail to connect to the wireless network if the signal is too weak. This is
normally caused by a blockage or the access point is too far from the clients.

Q9

Single Answer
Question
What could prevent a computer system from accessing the Internet aside from a faulty Internet
modem?

Correct answer

Clients are not configured properly

Firewall settings are too strict
Operating systems are incompatible
System drivers are not installed

Points1
Explanation
Clients must be configured correctly so that they will be able to access the Internet by
connecting to the central access point.

Q10

Single Answer

Question
A fault that is identified after it was already experienced is referred to as _______________.

Correct answer

assistive
inactive
proactive
reactive

Points1
Explanation
The term reactive refers to the action wherein the computer technicians react to the unusual
conditions experienced, therefore identifying the faults.
