CE-251 (Traffic Engineering Part) Feb 2022

• Please answer all questions and make (as required) and state suitable assumptions.
• You must show all your work and provide illustration as needed.
• Marks are displayed besides the questions.
• In case your data result in infeasible or absurd result, show calculations and state the infeasibility.
Your answer would be considered complete.

1.) Spot speeds at a location are a1, a2, a3, a4, a5 and a6 km/h. Compute (a) Space
mean speed, (b) Time mean speed

2.) The vehicle occupancy measured by a detector is c2 %. The time mean speed and
standard deviation of space mean spot speed are c1 (km/h) and b1 (km/h)
respectively. How many vehicles do you expect to see in 30 minutes?

3.) The following data were obtained from a speed study. Find the space mean speed
and time mean speed. Comment on your results.
Speed Range (km/h) Frequency
1-5 𝒇𝟏
5-10 𝒇𝟐
10-20 𝒇𝟑
20-30 𝒇𝟒
30-40 𝒇𝟓
40-50 𝒇𝟔

4.) Average headway and spacing measured on a road corridor (length 2.5 km) are
b1 seconds and 10*b2 m respectively. What is the average travel time (in minutes)
experienced by a vehicle?

5.) The data from five test runs of a moving observer are shown in the table below. A
gives the number of vehicles moving against the stream, B gives the number of
vehicles that had overtaken the test vehicle, and C gives the number of vehicles
overtaken by the test vehicle. Find the three fundamental stream parameters for
each set of data. Also, plot the fundamental diagrams of traffic flow. Assume the
travel time in both the direction is b1 minutes and the length of the road section as
1 km

Sample No A B C
1 a1 2*f1 b3
2 a2 2*f2 b3
3 a3 2*f3 b3
4 a4 2*f4 b3
5 a5 2*f5 b3

6.) Fit a Greenshields’ model to the following data. Sort a1 through a5 to produce V1
through V5 such that V1<V2<V3<V4<V5.
k v
a1 + 100 V1
a2 + 60 V2
a3 V2
a4/2 V4
a5/6 V5
