2.1 The Purpose of this document is to explain Drift inspection.

3. PERSONS AFFECTED

3.1 This document is applicable to all:

3.1.1 All Tenaris Premium Connections Manufacturing Services Personnel.
3.1.2 Facilities licensed to thread TenarisHydril connections.

4. REFERENCES

4.1 Applicable Connection Procedure

5. DEFINITIONS AND ABBREVIATIONS

5.1 Definitons and Abbreviations are defined in the most current revision of TenarisHydril document
TSH-GP-00.0001.

5.2 ID End Drift: The ID End Drift determines the ability of a specified mandrel to pass through the ID
of the swaged pin. It is used to determine removal of pin end deformation caused by the swaging
process. This inspection applies only to those ends swaged or box ends sized smaller than the
original pipe plain end condition prior to threading.

5.3 OD End Drift: The OD End Drift determines the ability of one the specified drifting technique, to
pass over the OD length of the box OD that has been sized. This inspection applies only to those
ends that have been sized larger prior to threading or expanded boxes where the maximum
allowed pipe body is larger than the OD turn.

5.4 Full Length Drift: The Full Length Drift determines the ability of a specified mandrel to pass
through the entire length of the ID. It is used to determine removal of pin end deformation
caused by the swaging process, straightness of the pipe, and acceptable ID dimension.

6. RESPONSIBILITIES

6.1 Responsibilities are defined in the most current revision of TenarisHydril document
TSH-GP-00.0002.

7. PERSONNEL QUALIFICATION

7.1 Personnel qualification is defined in the most current revision of TenarisHydril document
TSH-GP-00.0003.

8. PROCEDURES

8.1 ID Drift Inspection

The measurement is made using a drift mandrel. The drift mandrel shall be cylindrical throughout
its entire length. It shall be of the length specified in API 5CT for the appropriate diameter listed
on the inspection report. Prior to use it shall be verified for diameter in three (3) places, leading

edge, center, and trailing edge measured in a straight line. Measurements taken in these areas
shall be taken twice approximately 900 apart. The diameter shall conform to specified diameter, -
0.000 inches, and +0.005 inches.
Insert the mandrel into the pipe in such a fashion as to not damage the face of the connection.
Pass the mandrel fully into the pipe past the full length of the threads. If the mandrel passes
freely, the pipe is acceptable.
8.1.1 OD Drift Inspection
OD drift measurement is by performing using one of the techniques listed below for OD
drifting. This condition usually occurs when box ends are sized larger than the original API
dimensions (TSH W511 /513) or sized boxes where the maximum allowed pipe body is
larger than the expanded OD turn (TSH W521/523/TSH SLX).

8.1.2 OD drift dimension – nominal OD X 1.5% , tolerance +0.000 and – 0.005”. ( example is
Nominal OD X 1.015”).

8.1.3 The OD drift operation shall be performed with any of the procedures named below,
although OD drifting by use of an OD drift ring is the preferred method.

8.1.3.1 OD Micrometer: set the micrometer to the OD drift dimension. Pass the OD
Micrometer over the OD approximately 1” off the end at least in 4 places spaced
about every 45 degrees.

8.1.3.2 Pass the OD micrometer over the OD axially as shown below in a plane about
every inch for 8” long. Repeat the operation at 90 degrees.

8.1.3.3 Sized boxes with turned OD’s – Perform steps in 8.1.3.1 and 8.1.3.2 except begin
checks at the OD turn transition and continue at 1” increments for 3” beyond end of
OD turn.

8.1.3.4 OD DRIFT RING: pass the OD drift ring over the OD of the sized end for 12”
minimum length. Standard OD drift rings may be purchased or built IAW
TE2053404.

8.1.3.5 Periphery Tape Pi-Tape

Accurately reading a precision diameter tape is simple and straight forward In the
illustration above, assume the tape has been stretched around a pipe that is
approximately 42” in diameter, and the proper 5 lbs. of pull has been put on the
tape. Start by reading the first dimension to the left of the “0” on the Vernier
member. In the example we have 42.125. Next, find the gradients that line up
exactly between the Gage member and the Vernier member. Read the number on
the Vernier scale. In this example the number is 17. Add this extension to the
42.125 to arrive at the exact measurement of 42.142.

Sized up boxes – check OD at 1” increments for 8”

Expanded boxes with turned OD’s - check OD at end of OD turn transition and for
1” increments for 3” beyond end of turn OD.

8.1.4 Full Length ID Drift

The measurement is made using a drift mandrel. The drift mandrel shall be cylindrical
throughout its entire length. It shall be of the length specified in API 5CT for the
appropriate diameter listedon the inspection report Prior to use it shall be verified for
diameter in three (3) places, leading edge, center, and trailing edge measured in a straight
0
line. Measurements taken in these areas shall be taken twice approximately 90 apart.
The diameter shall conform to specified diameter on the inspection report to a tolerance of,
-0.000 inches, and +0.005 inches.
Insert the mandrel into the pipe typically from the pin end and passed through the entire
length, using a reasonably exerted force that does not exceed the weight of the mandrel, to
the box end in such a fashion as to not damage the face of the connection. Pass the
mandrel fully into the pipe past the full length of the threads. If the mandrel passes freely,
the pipe is acceptable.

8.2 Acceptance / Rejection Criteria

ID End Drift is acceptable if the mandrel passes freely throughout the entire threaded connection
length or swaged area (whichever is longer).
OD End Drift is acceptable if the OD drifting technique selected is within tolerance of the
instructions provided above for the technique.
Full length drift is acceptable if the mandrel passes freely in accordance with section 8.1.4.

Repair of no drifts in the connection area by grinding or machining is acceptable. Bore shoulders
are not acceptable. Bore shoulders occur whenever there is an abrupt transition from the botred
ID to the existing pipe ID, which may prevent the free passage of the drift. Bore shoulders shall
be reworked. Confirm the rework is acceptable per the requirements listed below:

8.2.1 Casing

Rotate the part so the reworked area is on the bottom of the connection and slowly drift the
part. Abrupt changes will stop (clicking sound) or impede the drift (greater force required),
while gradual changes will allow the drift to overcome its own weight and pass freely into
the pipe ID.

8.2.2 Tubing

Rotate the part so the reworked area is on the bottom of the connection.
Pick-up on the end of the drift, and slowly drift the part. Abrupt changes which require
additional rework will result in a clicking sound or impede the drift (greater force required).
Rotate the part to several different positions and repeat the drifting process.

Drift diameter is indicated on the Inspection Report.

8.3 Records
The result of these inspections shall be recorded on the IR.
