Find the Midpoint on a number line

1. Finding the Midpoint of a Number Line

Segment Using Integers
: Example 1

Step 1: Identify the two numbers on the number line.

The two numbers are -2 and 4.

Step 2: To find the midpoint between the two numbers, add the two numbers and divide
the sum by 2.

The midpoint between -2 and 4 is 1.

2. Finding the Midpoint of a Number Line
Segment Using Integers: Example 2

Step 1: Identify the two numbers on the number line.

The two numbers are 24 and 40.

Step 2: To find the midpoint between the two numbers, add the two numbers and divide
the sum by 2.

The midpoint between 24 and 40 is 32.

What Is a Ray in Math? The definition of ray in math is that it is a part
of a line that has a fixed starting point but no endpoint. It can extend
infinitely in one direction. Since a ray has no end point, we can't
measure its length

opposite rays are two rays or collinear that have the 'same
endpoint and extend in opposite directions.

An angle is formed by two rays with a

common endpoint.
Each ray is called Sides of the angle.
The common endpoint is called the
vertex of the angle.

Congruent angles are the angles that have equal measure. So all the angles that
have equal measure will be called congruent angles. They are seen everywhere,
for example, in equilateral triangles,
Vertical Angles ‫

According to the vertical angles theorem, vertical angles are always congruent.

Statement Reason

∠1+∠2 = 180° Linear Pair

∠1+∠4 = 180° Linear Pair

∴ ∠1+∠2 = 180∘ = ∠1+∠4 By equating the above two equations

Quantities equal to the same quantity are equal to each other.

∴ ∠1+∠2 =∠1+∠4
(Transitive: if a=b and b=c that implies a=c)

If equals are subtracted from equals, the differences are equal.

∴ ∠2 =∠4
(By eliminating ∠1 on both sides)

Also, ∠1=∠3 Similarly, we can prove for ∠1 and ∠3

Corresponding Angles ‫

The corresponding angles definition tells us that when two parallel lines are
intersected by a third one, the angles that occupy the same relative position
at each intersection are known to be corresponding angles to each other.

When a transversal intersects two parallel lines, corresponding angles are

always congruent to each other. In this figure, ∠1 = ∠2.
Alternate Angles ‫

When a transversal intersects two parallel lines, each pair of alternate

angles are congruent.

Refer to the figure above. We have:

∠1 = ∠5 (corresponding angles)
∠3 = ∠5 (vertically opposite angles)
Thus, ∠1 = ∠3
Consecutive Interior Angle

Congruent Angles Examples

Example 1: Find the measurement of angle f.

Solution:

Here, ∠DOE and ∠AOC are congruent (vertical) angles. So, ∠DOE = ∠AOC.

113∘ = 90º+f

f = 113°-90°

f = 23°

Therefore, the value of f is 23 degrees.

Example 2: If the given figure, two lines are parallel and are intersected by a
transversal. What will be the measure of ∠x and ∠y?

Solution:

The given lines are parallel and according to the congruent alternate angles theorem,
the given angle of measure 85∘ and ∠x are alternate congruent angles. So, 85∘ = ∠x.
Similarly, 95∘ and y are congruent alternate angles. So, 95∘ = ∠y.

Therefore, the value of ∠x is 85°, and ∠y is 95°.

Example 3: Use the consecutive interior angles theorem to find the value of
angle 'x' if line 1 and line 2 are parallel.

Solution:

In the figure, it is given that 40° and ∠x are consecutive interior angles and 'Line 1' and
'Line 2' are parallel.

By the consecutive interior angles theorem, ∠x and 40° are supplementary.

∠x + 40° = 180°
∠x = 180° - 40°

Therefore, ∠x = 140°.
Example 4 : JK and KM are opposite rays, and KN bisects ∠ JKL
if m∠JKN = (8x - 13) and m∠NKL = (6x +11)°, find m∠JKN.

∠JKN = (8x - 13)° (given)

∠NKL = (6x +11)° (given)

∠JKN = ∠NKL ( As KN bisects ∠JKL )

8x - 13 = 6x + 11 ( substituting equations from question )
8x - 6x = 11 + 13 ( bringing like terms on same side)
2x = 24
x = 24/2
x = 12
Now, put value of x in the given equation: ∠JKN = (8x - 13). we get
∠JKN = (8x - 13)
∠JKN = (8*12 - 13)
∠JKN = (96 - 13)
∠JKN = 83°
