The howling of the wind was the only thing heard during a moment of silence at the 7th annual Veterans Day Commemoration at Dodona Manor in Leesburg. The event, put on by the Town of Leesburg, Dodona Manor, the county and Morningside House commemorated all service members in the community. The ceremony included the Tuscarora High School Marching Band, the Loudoun Chorale with Col. Phil Rusciolelli, U.S. Army (Ret.) presiding over the event. Leesburg Mayor Kristen Umstattd attended the ceremony along with Loudoun County Supervisor Kelly Burk (D-Leesburg), state delegate-elect Randy Minchew (R-10th), Delegate Tag Greason (R-32nd), Senator Mark Herring (D- 33rd) and Leesburg Town Council member and Leesburg Supervisor-elect Ken Reid. One of the speakers, Col. Ron Clark, U.S. Marines (Ret.), was trained as a Chinese linguist and served in diplomatic posts with the nationalist Chinese government and commanded Marine Corps units. Clark is a highly decorated officer that has received the Bronze Star with Combat V, two Purple Hearts, the Presidents Medal for Distinguished Service and many more. Clark spoke about honor and gratitude to service members. All those American men and women who have sacrificed so much to preserve the gift of freedom that all Americans enjoy, Clark said. Freedom is not an entitlement it is a gift thats been earned through the sacrifices and lives of American military men and women. For all of you veterans who have served and sacrificed much, thank you, he added. The second speaker, John O. Marsh Jr., a former Secretary of the Army and former Congressman from Virginia, told the history of George C. Marshall who lived at Dodona Manor who showed great duty and honor for his county. The word duty should be in the vocabulary of every American, Marsh said. Veterans Day should remind each of us what our duty is to our county and to our county men.

Its great to have a military veteran in our Mayor Umstattd. She has never failed to be out there for veterans, and for that, thank you.
