If you want to gain real control over
your destiny, you must understand
reincarnation and how it works. It's
that simple.

Introduction
www.harekrishna.com
Reincarnation-based on the
principle of a conscious self
independent of its physical body-is
part of a higher-order system
governing the living being's
transmigration from one material
form to another. Since reincamation
deals with our most essential
selves, it is a subject of the utmost
relevance to everyone.
I know I am deathless...
We have thus far exhausted
trillions of winters and summers,
There are trillions ahead, and
trillions ahead of them.
It is impossible to understand
reincarnation unless one knows the
difference between the actual self
(the soul) and the body.
The Gita helps us see the nature of
the soul by the following example.
"As the sun alone illuminates all this
universe, so does the living entity,
one within the body, illuminate the
entire body by consciousness."
Consciousness is concrete
evidence of the presence of the soul
within the body. On a cloudy day,
the sun may not be visible, but we
know it is there in the sky by the
presence of sunlight. Similarly, we
may not be able to directly perceive
the soul, but we may conclude it is
there by the presence of
consciousness. In the absence of
consciousness, the body is simply a
lump of dead matter. Only the
presence of consciousness makes
this lump of dead matter breathe,
speak, love, and fear. In essence,
the body is a vehicle for the soul,
through which it may fulfill its myriad
material desires. The Gita explains
that the living entity within the body
is "seated as on a machine made of
the material energy." The soul
falsely identifies with the body,
carrying its different conceptions of
life from one body to another as the
air carries aromas. Just as an
automobile cannot function without
the presence of a
driver, similarly, the material body
cannot function without the
presence of the soul.
According to Bhagavad-gita,
humans who do not inquire about
their nonphysical, higher nature are
compelled by the laws of karma to
continue in the cycle of birth, death,
and rebirth, sometimes appearing
as humans, sometimes as animals,
and sometimes as plants or insects.

Although advanced in
understanding the mechanical
workings of the physical body,
modern science gives little
attention to analyzing the
spiritual spark that animates the
body. In the Montreal Gazette
article reproduced below, we find
world-famous cardiologist
Wilfred G. Bigelow urging
systematic research to determine
what the soul is and where it
comes from. Reproduced next is
Srila Prabhupada's letter in
response to Dr. Bigelow's plea.
Srila Prabhupada presents
substantial
Vedic evidence about the science
of the soul and suggests a
practical method for scientifically
understanding this spiritual spark
that gives the body life and
makes reincarnation a reality.
WINDSOR -- A world-famous
Canadian heart surgeon says he
believes the body has a soul which
departs at death and says
theologians ought to try to find out
more about it.

-- Bhagavad-gita 2.29
As explained in Bhagavad-gita, it is
not by any father or mother that the
living entity
is given birth. The living entity's true
identity is completely separate from
the so-called father and mother. By
the laws of nature, the soul is forced
to enter the semen of a father and
be injected into the womb of a
mother. He cannot directly control
the kind of father he will get; this is
automatically determined by his
activities in previous lives. The laws
of karma force him to go to different
fathers and mothers, just like a
commodity that is bought and sold.

-- Metamorphoses
Srimad-Bhagavatam, composed
some three thousand years before
Ovid's time, contains the following
unique story that dramatically
reveals the principles of
reincarnation in action. India's great
and pious monarch, King Bharata,
due to his extreme attachment to a
deer, had to spend one life in a
deer's body before again
attaining a human form.

Dreams and Past Lives
In dreams we sometimes see things
that we have never experienced in
the present body. Sometimes in
dreams we think that we are flying
in the sky, although we have no
experience of flying. This means
that once in a previous life, either as
a demigod or astronaut, we flew in
the sky. The impression is there in
the stockpile of the mind, and it
suddenly expresses itself. It is like
fermentation taking place in the
depths of water, which sometimes
manifests itself in bubbles on the
water's surface. Sometimes we
dream of coming to a place we have
never known or experienced in this
lifetime, but this is proof that in a
past life we experienced this. The
impression is kept within the mind
and sometimes becomes manifest
either in dream or in thought. The
conclusion is that the mind is the
storehouse of various thoughts and
experiences undergone during our
past lives. Thus there is a chain of
continuation from one life to
another, from previous lives to this
life, and from this life to future lives.

Has it occurred to you that
transmigration
is at once an explanation and a
justification of the evil of the
world ? If the evils we suffer are
the resu/t of sins committed in
our past lives, we can bear them
with resignation and hope that if
in this one we strive toward virtue
our future lives will be less
afflicted.

Chapter 7

The living entity, who has
received his present body
because of his past fruitive
activity, may end the results of
his actions in this life, but this
does not mean that he is
liberated from bondage to
material bodies. The living entity
receives one type of body, and by
performing actions with that body
he creates another. Thus he
transmigrates from one body to
another, through repeated birth
and death, because of his gross
ignorance.
