Slide 1

Prejudice against, or discrimination of, a person or a group of people by an individual or

community because they belong to a particular racial or ethnic group.

Slide 2

Racism has existed for many years, but it was aggravated by slavery and human trafficking,
which turned human beings into bargaining chips because they had different skin colors.
Originally, these people were Africans and South Americans (Indians).

Slide 3
Cultural racism:

Contempt for or inferiorization of the cultures of ethnic or racial groups.

Slide 4

George Floyd was an African-American murdered in Minneapolis, strangled by a white police

officer who knelt on his neck during an approach for allegedly using a counterfeit twenty-dollar
bill in a supermarket. After his death, protests against racism began to take place in the United
States and around the world. This lead to the creation of one of the biggest movements in history
known by Black Lives Matter.

Slide 5

Black Lives Matter is an international activist movement, originating in the African-American

community, which campaigns against violence against black people.

Slide 6

Is the name of three distinct movements in the United States that defend reactionary and
extremist currents, such as white supremacy, white nationalism and anti-immigration. British
newspaper The Guardian reports that cases of racist violence are on the rise in Portugal currently.
Slide 7

Racism in Portugal, despite not being so evident, has still been practiced by many people, for
reasons that are sometimes are not easy to understand.

A group of 16 people with pre-booked tables were prevented from entering the Urban nightclub.
The argument: "Too many blacks in the group!". Among the group were athletes like Nelson
Évora.

Patrícia Mamona, when she was 29, was prevented from entering the Lux nightclub, in Lisbon,
for allegedly “not fitting the profile” of the club.

Moussa Marega, a Futebol Clube do Porto player, was the victim of racist chants during a game
against Vitória de Guimarães.

We have already talked about racism in class but this topic is so important that it still needs to be
discussed. Racism nowadays is being more and more erased, but many people continue being
racist. ( Que tal fazermos umas perguntas retóricas tipo “What makes someone racist? Have they
ever tried being a friend of someone of color?” e depois fazemos meio que uma conclusão
dizendo o porque e que a maioria é racista, devido aos bairros e aos roubos, mas que nem todos
são assim e que isso afeta todos com cor

Buicinha: So Leandro, speaking of racism. Did you know that I have a friend who is Afro-descendant?

Leo: I think I know who you're talking about, isn't that Miguel, the one who lives in Gramas?
Buicinha: Yes, the last time I spoke to him, I noticed that he was a little sad, because he had an 19,9 grade
for Medicine and was not accepted at the university.
Leo: Man, are you kidding? Why?
Buicinha: Because a white colleague who came from Lisbon with a score of 19.8 was accepted instead of
him
Leo: I can’t believe it, bro. Look, he is here!
Buicinha: What`s up, Miguel?
Leo: We were talking about you man. How did you feel after that?

Miguel: Hi, guys, After what, Leandro?

Leo: The university
Miguel: I felt less human, it was bad, it was an act of racism towards one of the best students in the
country.
Leo: And what are you going to do about it?
Miguel: As much as I would like to, I can't do anything, the university is an institution, its power in
society is much bigger that my individual power. I just have to accept the fact it and try to apply for
another degree at another university.
Buicinha: Man, that s bad.
Leo: We need to fight against this.
Buicinha: We can’t let other people feel this kind of pain just because of skin color.

Miguel: Sometimes I wish I knew what makes people be like this…

Has an African descedant ever done anything bad to these people? Do they think we are all the same?
Have they ever tried being friends with people of a different color?
I think that if people thought this way, racism would decrease a lot….
