Students' Academic Performance When It Comes to Facebook Engagement: A

Literary Review

This paper offers an overview of the comparable studies that have been
carried out and published in journal articles and similar research papers that provide
findings from tests that support statements on the current issue about the
engagement of students on social media platforms like Facebook. This popular
social network can be streamlined into education as it allows students to easily
connect with teachers and peers after class hours. Following an initial selection
process, the research theme—the impact of Facebook on students' academic
performance, including both advantages and disadvantages—was determined. This
paper evaluates social media's function as a teaching tool in higher education, with a
focus on Facebook. This study examines the various ways that Facebook is being
used as a teaching and learning tool through a review of the literature.

The study of Niu (2019) investigated the international literature on using

Facebook for academic purposes to examine whether and how this popular social
networking site contributes to teaching and learning in formal education. The findings
of the reviewed studies suggest that the most common positive effect of using
Facebook for academic purposes is the enhancement of interaction among students
and instructors. The results of the study is that most students believed that Facebook
would provide opportunity for communication and collaboration with classmates. The
majority of the researchers drew positive conclusions about using Facebook for
academic purposes, and recommended that Facebook be integrated into the
teaching and learning process.

Another study of Menzies, Petrie, Zarb (2017) outlines a Facebook strategy

that has been embraced by the student body, they investigated the use of Facebook,
which closely maps to the curriculum. The results shows that Facebook strategy is
useful in promoting collaborative learning alongside the face-to-face delivery of
content. The positive feedback from students indicates that this structure is useful in
promoting collaborative learning and discussions, whilst supplementing the face-to-
face delivery of curriculum content. In addition, students report that they enjoy using
the Facebook structure as an educational and organizational medium, as it allows for
a manageable divide between educational and social activity.

These previous studies show the positive impact of students' engagement on

the most popular social network, Facebook, on their academic performance.
Facebook, as a form of social media, is known to be a rich source of entertainment
and a useful platform for people to meet and keep in touch virtually. Besides fun and
interactions, people have also started using Facebook for educational purposes,
especially those in the education industry, such as educators and students; they
have turned this social media into a platform to share and expand their knowledge in
many ways (Mazman & Usluel, 2010). However, Facebook also has disadvantages
that may affect the student's academic performance.

According to the study of Junco (2014), he investigated the effects of social

media on college students, with a specific focus on the most popular social media
website—Facebook. The studies examined the relationship between Facebook use
and student engagement and shows that there's no relationship between frequency
of Facebook use and time spent preparing for class; however, there was a significant
negative relationship between frequency of engaging in Facebook chat and time
spent preparing for class. It shows that students who spent more time chatting online
reported more academic impairment. While academic impairment was not evaluated
in the current study, the negative relationship between engaging in Facebook chat
and time spent preparing for class suggests that there is something about the
process of online chatting that detracts from schoolwork. This concludes that
Facebook use was significantly negatively predictive of engagement scale score and
positively predictive of time spent in co-curricular activities.

To conclude, Facebook can promote learning and collaboration among peers

and develop a sense of community. The study shows that students have adopted the
use of Facebook to communicate and discuss with one another when they cannot do
so in class. It is especially helpful when they cannot meet face-to-face. Facebook
establishes a sense of community between users, possibly enabling more
collaboration and sharing of ideas, which fosters learning. In contrast, the other study
claimed that Facebook may also cause academic impairment in students as it may
distract their focus and influence them to do unpleasant work. Facebook
engagement by students has advantages and disadvantages. It is important that
students practice being responsible and use online platforms as a way of learning
and gaining knowledge.
