1. GENERAL PROVISIONS

1.1. The aim of these regulations - to set out unified requirements regarding the
compilation and layout of all independent research papers at Turiba University
(hereinafter - BAT).
1.2. These regulations include unified requirements for the compilation and layout of all
independent research papers compiled by students of BAT (papers, practice reports,
study papers, independent research papers, qualification papers, academic and
professional bachelor theses and master theses) (hereinafter referred to as - Papers).
1.3. Additional requirements to be complied with in the preparation of doctoral theses
are expressed in a separate regulation.
1.4. The specific requirements of the branch or sub-branch, taking into account the
specifics of the professional standards and the peculiarities of study
directions/disciplines, for the Papers included in the study process are regulated by the
relevant faculty or department (hereinafter - Faculty), which may set forth their own
additional recommendations.
1.5. The Faculty can only set out requirements for Papers on those aspects that are not
foreseen in these regulations herein.

PART 1. METHODOLOGICAL REQUIREMENTS

2. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
2.1. Student shall follow the following requirements while compiling Papers:
2.1.1. Students shall carry out independent research on actual issues connected to the study
programme without just copying the literature or other sources of material, data or
information;
2.1.2. The content of the Papers shall provide consistent solutions to issues in accordance
with the topic, research goals, tasks and hypothesis or research question (with the
exception of practice reports);
2.1.3. The transition from one issue to another and from chapter to chapter should be
mutually connected;
2.1.4. Unified and consistent terminology shall be used throughout the Paper;
2.1.5. The progress of the research, results, conclusions and recommendations shall be
reflected in a precise, logical, coherent and complete manner;
2.1.6. Disclosure of information that is legally protected and in the possession of the student
is prohibited (e.g. personal data, confidential investigative reports, commercial secrets
etc.);
2.1.7. References shall be provided for facts, data, information, definitions and citations
included in the Papers if they have not been worked out by the authors themselves.
2.1.8. When submitting the independent research work during the next study stage, it is
allowed to use up to 50% of the text from the work of the previous study stage. These
texts may be used in the review of literature sources and legal norms. However, they
may not be used in empirical research or in the conclusions / proposals section.
2.2. The Papers shall be written in formal academic language in passive voice („was
researched”, „results of analysis indicate” etc.) and/or in third person („author” and
not „I”, „My” etc.).
2.3. Abbreviations and terms may be used in the Paper in accordance with the generally
accepted spelling rules of the language of writing or the type prescribed by law.
Abbreviations and terms created by the author or used in the relevant field of science
must be indicated by the full names or a list of abbreviations and terms should be
added. Traditionally used abbreviations (for example- e.g., etc.,) do not need to be
explained.
2.4. The list of abbreviations and terms must be compiled, if the number of
abbreviations and terms created by the author in the Paper exceeds 10 and the author
shall decide on the necessity of the list of abbreviations and terms if the number is
smaller. Abbreviations and terms may be used in the Paper after it is written in full
first and followed by the relevant abbreviation or term in brackets (for example -
“Anti-Money Laundering (hereinafter - AML) ”or“ Ministries and other state
institutions (hereinafter - institutions ”)
2.5. The list of abbreviations and terms shall be drawn up on a separate sheet in an
alphabetical order, providing the full form/name for each of the abbreviations in a new
line.
2.6. The analysis, interpretations and statements shall be grounded; declarative
statements and clichés, pointless descriptions and empty phrases, mechanical copying
of notions, definitions, and citations should be avoided; and the opinions of the author
must be reflected.
2.7. Vulgar unjustified criticism is not allowed while analysing the works of other
authors; international and national copyright laws and ethical norms of scientific
research shall be observed. Plagiarism (citing the works of other authors as one’s own
in parts or as a whole) or repeatedly submitting one and the same work without
making fundamental changes in them is prohibited.
2.8. Students of the Faculty of Law (hereinafter – JF) must use law sources and judicial
documents while compiling their Papers. Students of other Faculties shall use law
sources to the scope as required by topics under research.

3. PLAN FOR COMPILATION OF PAPERS


3.1. The following plan for compilation of Papers is recommended:
3.1.1. Choice of topic, choice of advisor (it could be a person designated in accordance with
the study course paper or practice programme), definition of hypothesis or research
question, formulation of goals and tasks, theme proposal application (refer Appendix
1., Appendix 2. ) and its approval;
3.1.2. Drafting the structure of the Paper and work plan for research;
3.1.3. Studying literature and sources and compiling a bibliography, clarifying the hypothesis
or research question if necessary;
3.1.4. The progress of the research, gathering information and materials, surveys and
systematisation;
3.1.5. Processing the information and materials gathered – analysis, interpretation,
generalisation, drawing conclusions and recommendations;
3.1.6. Writing and compiling the first draft version of the Paper;
3.1.7. Revising the Paper taking into account the remarks and recommendations of the
advisor;
3.1.8. Compiling the final version of the Paper.
3.2. Students shall coordinate the deadlines for the Paper and the rights and obligations
with the advisor.
3.3. Students can choose the topic for the paper taking into account the recommendations
of the Faculty and the department or independently in accordance with one’s interests
by justifying the topicality of the theme. The topic shall be approved by the
advisor. The theme of the concluding final Paper can be a continuation of previous
study (course) papers or an entirely new topic.
3.4. Theme propoal applications for qualification papers, bachelor theses, diploma theses
and master theses (refer) shall be approved by the dean of the Faculty or the head of
the department. Theme propoal applications for study papers are approved by the head
of the department.

4. THE SCOPE OF THE PAPER AND ITS STRUCTURE


4.1. The scope of the Paper should be as follows (The scope of the Paper includes pages
from the Introduction to Conclusions and proposals, i.e. excluding title page,
annotations, list of abbreviations, list of figures and tables, table of contents, list of
used literature and sources and appendices):
4.1.1. Practice reports – in accordance with the relevant practice descriptions for the study
year;
4.1.2. Study papers for the first study year - from 15 to 25 pages;
4.1.3. Study papers for the second and third study year – from 25 to 35 pages, unless
otherwise determined in the relevant study program;
4.1.4. Qualification papers – from 35 to 45 pages;
4.1.5. Bachelor theses – from 50 to 60 pages;
4.1.6. Professional bachelor theses – from 50 to 60 pages;;
4.1.7. Master theses – from 60 to 80 pages;
4.1.8. Doctoral theses – from 120 to 160 pages.
4.2. The structure of the Paper shall consist of:
4.2.1. Title page;
4.2.2. annotation with keywords (in Final concluding paper of the study programme and
study papers);
4.2.3. list of abbreviations and acronyms if there are 10 (ten) or more in the Paper;
4.2.4. list of figures and tables if there are 10 (ten) or more in the Paper;
4.2.5. table of contents;
4.2.6. Introduction;
4.2.7. main chapters of the paper (chapters and sub chapters);
4.2.8. conclusions and recommendations.
4.2.9. list of literature and sources used;
4.2.10. appendices (if necessary);
4.3. Pages of the Paper shall be numbered from the title page, with the page numbers
starting from the page after the title page. It is not necessary to indicate the page
number on the title page.
4.4. Pages of the Paper must be numbered at the bottom, horizontally centred with Arabic
numerals without points or other punctuation marks.

5. SCOPE OF SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS TO BE USED IN PAPERS


5.1. All published or publicized works written by a cited author shall be considered as
scientific literature, e.g.:
5.1.1. articles published in scientific journals or published on the Internet (including
literature available in electronic databases Web of Science, Scopus, Erih Plus, Science
Direct, EBSCO and others, indicating the electronic identifier DOI);
5.1.2. scientific textbooks,
5.1.3. edited editions and publications,
5.1.4. publications in conference proceedings,
5.1.5. an article or chapter in a collection of articles or a scientific book,
5.1.6. Published conference/meeting abstracts,
5.1.7. scientific publications, research reports and reports prepared,
5.1.8. publications of inventions
5.1.9. monographs.
5.2. The minimum number of scientific publications used in Papers shall be:
5.2.1. Study papers for the first study year – at least 5 (five) sources;
5.2.2. Study papers for the second study year - at least 10 (ten) sources;
5.2.3. Study papers for the third study year - at least 15 (fifteen) sources;
5.2.4. Qualification papers – at least 15 (fifteen) sources;
5.2.5. Academic and professional bachelor theses – at least 20 (twenty) sources;
5.2.6. Master theses– at least 30 (thirty) sources.

6. COMPONENTS OF THE PAPER


6.1. Annotation – a short summary of the Paper that provides readers an insight about the
research work carried out and its main results. Annotation shall reflect the topic, goals
of research, materials and methods used and main results of the Paper. The scope of
the Paper (number of pages, taking into account the clause 4.1), number of tables and
figures, number of appendices, keywords. Technical requirements for the annotation
are as follows:
6.1.1. Final concluding Papers in two languages – Latvian and English;
6.1.2. Study papers – One in the language the study paper is written;
6.1.3. Scope of the annotation – up to 1000 characters with spaces;
6.1.4. Annotations shall not be indicated in the table of contents.
6.2. Introduction:
6.2.1. description of the theoretical and practical topicality of the topic, existing problems,
practical usefulness and justification of the choice of the topic, indicating statistical
data, current legal proceedings, new legal acts, etc.;
6.2.2. Research environment/ context/area - organisation, case, process etc. that arouses the
interest of the author (e.g. enterprise, field of law, sector, tour itinerary, mass media
etc.). This is compulsory for the final concluding papers;
6.2.3. Research object shows certain features and relations of the research
environment/context/area, a specific part of the environment/ context/area that is
being studied/researched herein. If the research environment/ context/area is an
enterprise, examples of a research object could be as follows – improvement
techniques in financial management, public relations, personnel management etc.),
aspects, which have a direct impact on the existence and functioning of the research
environment/context/area. This is compulsory for the final concluding papers.
6.2.4. Research question or research hypothesis (compulsory for the final concluding Paper):
6.2.4.1 The research question is the initial statement of the author formulated as a question that
connects the subject of the research with the research context (environment) and
identifies the problems faced;
6.2.4.2 the research question can be formulated both as a closed and an open question
depending on the specific requirements of the research goal, subject, research context
(environment), research industry or sub-industry, for example "Does SIA "W"
implement an appropriate information storage option?" or "How to improve personnel
management processes in company X?";
6.2.4.3 The research hypothesis is the assumption of the author that stems from the research
(main research problem) that the author would test/study during the research; it would
either be confirmed or rejected based on the main research results. The research
hypothesis is defined based on the literature analysis of the subject of the
research. Only statements/assumptions that are not generally known/accepted
circumstances and those that directly correspond to the aims and objectives of the
theme under research as a whole and not just a part/chapter of the Paper can be
formulated as a hypothesis. For example, „The desired changes in the organisational
culture of SIA „W” are related to changes in process management and factors that
influence them” or „Frequent changes in legislation concerning insolvency processes
are related to economic interests of foreign investors”;
6.2.4.4 there should be only one research question or hypothesis.
6.2.5. The author shall define and formulate the Goal of the Paperbased on the actuality of
the topic and the author's opinion of possible solutions to the issues being researched.
The definition shall be clear, short and concise. The goal of the Paper should be
indicated as the achievement of a specific result (develop a methodology, offer
procedures, develop guidelines, improve the type, improve the system, offer a
solution, etc.); there should be only one goal;
6.2.6. In order to achieve the research goal, the Tasks of the Paperare defined,
which determine the activities that reflect the main content of the research, for
example: to study, characterize, evaluate, analyse, compare, group, survey,
etc.; there must be at least three tasks and they must be numbered;
6.2.7. Research methods used in the Paper shall be specifically mentioned
justifying why and in what way each particular method is used; e.g. Survey
method to obtain data on students' attitudes towards the research question;
Document analysis method, evaluating the materials available in the archive;
Experimental method to test how a theoretical assumption works in a practical
environment; Methods of interpretation of legislation in order to apply the
relevant legislation more correctly, etc;
6.2.6. Limitations of the research (if it is not possible to fully research the topic within the
scope of the Paper) in the context of time and place, accessibility of the target group
etc. should be explained briefly; for example, the paper analyses the procedure of
marriage and divorce from 1918 to the present day, but does not analyse problems in
the period from 1940 to 1990; Farms in Latvia will be analysed, except for those
in Zilupe and Vilani region”;
6.2.7. Theoretical base for the research, that form the theoretical base for the Paper (sources,
models, theories etc.), and which previous research works, methods, information, data
etc. have been used shall be described;
6.2.8. Practical contribution of the research and theoretical novelty (if any).
6.3. The main part shall consist of:
6.3.1. The theoretical part shall cover (review and justify) the progress of the research related
to the specific tasks that have to be carried out by citing, paraphrasing and evaluating
the opinions of other authors and also appending the views of the author
himself/herself on the above-mentioned. The main part shall analyse e.g. theories,
theoretical concepts, models, legal enactments, draft laws or any other documents that
could be a source of law as well as evaluate specific practical examples and theoretical
conceptions and notions relevant to the problem under research. Scientific concepts
and ideas shall not just be mentioned but shall be analysed, compared and evaluated
emphasising the opinions and arguments of the author. All issues reviewed in the
theoretical part shall be directly related to issues related to the topic of the Paper, its
goals and shall ensure the successful fulfilment of the research.
6.3.2. In the empirical part the author shall carry out independent empirical research, using the
theoretical knowledge gained, forecasting the possible development of the issues.
6.3.2.1 The empirical part shall include a situation analysis carried out independently by the
author and the research results, cause and effect relationships of these results and a
review of possible alternative solutions in accordance with the goal as well as a list of
comprehensive well justified recommendations and evaluation of hypothesis or the
research question;
6.3.2.2 The empirical part shall also include a description of the research methodology and
theoretical justification for the design/plan of the selected research, the type of
research, the sampling procedure of the target group(s) of the research, the selected
data collection and analysis methods, etc. aspects related to research methodology;
6.3.2.3 Students shall use materials gathered during practice placements, results of
independent surveys, description of empirically obtained results, compare one’s own
results with results from similar research works and analyse the results in accordance
with the hypothesis or the research question put forward.
6.3.3. Students of study programs related to the field of law shall carry out additional in depth
analysis of specific legal sources (national, European Union as well as international
legal acts and case law) related to the problem under research.
6.4. Structure of the main part:
6.4.1. Chapters and sub chapters of the main part shall be dedicated to separate tasks set
during the research of the topic;
6.4.2. If a chapter is divided into sub chapters, there must be at least two subchapters;
6.4.3. Chapters and subchapters shall be divided proportionally and subchapters have to be not
less than two pages and have to be logically structured and interconnected;
6.4.4. Chapters and subchapters cannot start with a figure or table;
6.4.5. Chapters and subchapters may not end with a citation, figure or table; the evaluation of
the author shall follow the citation, figure or table – analysis, grounded opinions for or
against the content of figures or tables, abovementioned concepts, ideas;
6.4.6. It is recommended that each chapter and subchapter is connected /related to the next
chapter or subchapter with a logical transition between them;
6.4.7. The chapter heading could be followed by a short summary (one to two paragraphs)
about the topics covered in the chapter, its constituent subchapters (if any). At the end
of the chapter, it is desirable to include the author's summary of what was discussed in
the chapter, creating a logical transition to the next chapter.
6.5. Data used in the main part:
6.5.1. The research should use the latest available data on the research topic;
6.5.2. It is recommended to use data and/or materials covering a period of three years in the
research;
6.5.3. The research results shall be illustrated in figures (diagrams, charts, photographs,
drawings) and tables. The repetition of the same data or information is not allowed,
e.g. in figure and the same as a table or text form; the best and most appropriate form
of representation of information on the research phenomena shall be used in each
case;
6.5.4. If tables and figures are used, an analysis of the data reflected therein, explaining and
justifying the development trends, dynamics and correlations identified for each of the
tables or figures shall be provided;
6.5.5. The repetition of description of theoretical and methodological base and empirical
research in subsequent chapters and sub chapters is not allowed;
6.5.6. Measurement and calculation results shall be indicated in international measurement
(SI) system units and Euros (EUR).
6.6. Conclusions and recommendations:
6.6.1. Conclusions and recommendations are the final part of the Paper and shall reflect the
main ideas and assessment of key issues and the final results of the research carried
out in the various chapters of the Paper. They shall stem from the independent
research carried out in the Paper and shall correspond to the goal of the Paper and
shall be logically presented in a short concise form;
6.6.2. Conclusions and recommendations may not repeat or include citations, statements of
other authors or rephrase them and shall only reflect the opinions, well-
grounded statements, proposals, ideas and notions of the author of the Paper;
6.6.3. Conclusions shall present a summary of the research results underlining the main
problems revealed by the author, main results of tasks set in the Paper and shall state
whether the hypothesis has been confirmed or not (it is desirable to show the level of
reliability) and justify it. If a research question had been posed, the conclusions shall
provide and answer to the question and underline the main problems revealed by the
author and the author’s conclusions;
6.6.4. Recommendations are worked out on the basis of the conclusions that offer definite
solutions to the problems and shall indicate the resources necessary for the
implementation of the recommendations, their source and expected outcomes.
Proposals should be aimed at eliminating specific shortcomings,
using the experience gained, well-groundedimprovements, enhancements, etc.
Proposals are formulated only on the basis of the conclusions reached. It is not
allowed to make declaratory general (slogans) proposals that do not have a clear
possibility of their practical implementation.
6.6.5. It is recommended that each conclusion and recommendation be presented as a separate
point or paragraph;
6.6.6. All conclusions and proposals should be numbered in ascending order.
6.7. If any explanations are required in the Paper that go beyond the scope of the research
topic, they can be included in the footnotes.

PART II. TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

7. TEXT LAYOUT
7.1. Papers must be compiled on a computer on A4 (210 x 297 mm) format pages printed
on one or both sides of the page (if printed), with the following sheet margins:
7.1.1. Left margin (or inside if printed on both sides -mirror margin) 30mm;
7.1.2. Right margin (or outside if printed on both sides -mirror margin) 15 mm;
7.1.3. Top margin 20 mm;
7.1.4. Bottom margin 20 mm (excluding page numbers).
7.2. The first line of each paragraph should have an indent of 1.25 cm from the left
margin. The text shall be justified so it evenly aligned along left and right margins.
The spacing between lines shall be 1.5 (one and half) lines. The same shall be used
between paragraphs.
7.3. The font size is 11 pt Arial or 12pt TimesNewRoman, unless otherwise specified in the
description of the relevant part of the Paper or sample.
7.4. Papers to be submitted shall be written in black.

7.5. One and the same font should be used throughout the Paper, except for images,
formulas (if specific mathematics symbol fonts are used) and appendices - Arial
or TimesNewRoman
While using the sample forms given in the appendices to these regulations in
the Paper, the font in them must be changed to the one used in the Paper.
7.6. Footnotes and notes should use a 2 pt smaller size font (9pt - Arial or
10 pt - TimesNewRoman) with a line spacing of 1 (single spaced line spacing).
7.7. The headings of chapters shall be written in big capital letters in bold and horizontally
centred, e.g., 1. CAPITAL LETTERS. The headings of sub chapters (second level)
shall be written in small capital letters in bold and horizontally centred, e.g., 1.1.
Small letters.
7.8. Third level headings shall be written in small letters in bold and horizontally centred
e.g. 1.1.1. Small letters.
7.9. Only headings of chapters and second and third level sub chapters are numbered in
the Paper.
7.10. The Paper may also have unnumbered sub headings, which the author of the work
can use in separate sections of the Paper to structure the text. The formatting of
unnumbered subheadings shall be in accordance with the headings referred to in the
clause 7.7. herein.
7.11. Subheadings shall be separated from the previous text by a 12 ptline spacing, and the
text that follows the subheading by a 6 ptline spacing. If a higher level heading is
followed by a lower level heading in the next paragraph, they shall be separated by a
6 pt line spacing. Unnumbered subheadings are not separated from the rest of the
text.
7.12. No full stops (punctuation marks) shall be used after the heading and subheading.
7.13. Chapters shall start with a fresh page. Subchapters need not start on a fresh page if
there are at least two lines of space under the heading.
7.14. Appendices shall be separated from the rest of the Paper by a separate page titled
“APPENDICES” with font size 18.
7.15. In order to facilitate the perception of the main and most important information, it can
be highlighted in the following ways:
7.15.1. by using ALL CAPITALS for the section to be highlighted. Capitals should not be
used with regard to any text that exceeds one line;
7.15.2. by underlining the section to be highlighted;
7.15.3. by using characters of different size;
7.15.4. by using italics;
7.15.5. it is not advised to use different means of highlighting within the limits of one paper.
7.16. One page shall contain no less than 25 lines of text; one full line of text shall contain
no less than 50 characters. Introduction and concluding page of the chapter shall have
not less than 15 text lines. If a page has less than 15 lines of text, it is not taken into
account when determining the total scope of the Paper. A page cannot end with a
heading.

8.

The title page of the Paper shall be formatted in accordance with the given sample,
(refer Appendix 3, Appendix 4).

9.TABLE OF CONTENTS AND HEADINGS


9.1. The table of contents should include introduction, chapters, second and third level sub
chapters, conclusions and proposals, a list of literature and sources, and a page with
the heading 'APPENDIX'.
9.2. Pages that come before the table of contents (title page, annotation, lists of
abbreviations and tables and figures) and appendices are not included in it.
9.3. It is recommended to make the table of contents automatically based
on Heading styles so that any changes made in the headings of chapters and sub
chapters are automatically updated in the table of contents. Dotted tab leaders shall be
used between the heading and the page number in the table of contents.
9.4. The line spacing in the table of contents shall be 1.5 lines (one and half).
9.5. Indents used in the table of contents for various heading levels shall be the same as in
the text.

9.7. Headings shall be short and concise. Headings in the Paper shall be written together
with the text and not on a separate sheet except for the heading „APPENDICES”. The
style of headings of chapters and sub chapters in the table of contents and
the Paperitself should be identical.

10. TABLES, FIGURES, FORMULAS AND UNITS


10.1. Quantitative and qualitative information and data shall be set out in the Paper in
tables in order to facilitate perception.
10.2. Each table, figure and formula is given an appropriate title and provide a reference to
the source. If it has been designed by the author based on primary data obtained by the
author himself, then the name of the table, image or formula shall be followed by the
text (designed by the author) enclosed in brackets (for JF students- in the footnotes).

10.3. Each table shall be given a number and heading. Table numbers shall be given
numbers in ascending order using Arabic numerals from the beginning of the Paper or
the beginning of a chapter. If there is only one table in the Paper, it shall not be
numbered.
10.4. Tables shall be centred horizontally.
10.5. The table number shall be written at the upper right hand corner of the table after the
word „Table” in italics and Times New Roman, 12 pt. or Arial 11 pt.
10.6. The heading of the table shall be written in bold Times New Roman, 12 pt., or Arial,
11 pt. and centred just above the table.
10.7. Table headings shall not be underlined. A full stop is not required after the table
heading. Table headings shall be brief and concise and easily understandable. It shall
indicate the topic of the table, contents and provide reference to sources of data used.
10.8. The size of the letters and numbers in the table is 1 pt smaller (10pt - Arial or
11 pt - TimesNewRoman) with a line spacing of 1 (single spaced line spacing).
10.9. Headings of columns shall be centred but the headings of rows shall be left aligned.
10.10. Numbers in tables shall be rounded off to at least two digits after the decimal except
in the case of whole numbers. If numbers are used in the table, starting with 1000 a
space must be used as a thousand separator.
10.11. Numbers in the table must be aligned with a decimal separator (if integers are used,
right-aligned alignment can be used).
10.12. It is not recommended to create a separate row or column for the same units in the
table, it is better to write them in the headings after the name of the respective
indicator.
10.13. If the full name of statistical indicators is written for one indicator the same shall be
used for all other indicators and if short forms or symbols are used the same shall be
used for all.
10.14. There must be no empty cells in the table. If it is not logically possible to fill in a
box, write an "X".

10.16. The table shall be placed in the Paper immediately after its first mention in the text5
or as close as possible to it.
10.17. Every table must be followed by an analysis and interpretation of the information
depicted in the table rather than a reproduction and repetition of the data included in
the table.
10.18. The table can be split between pages, keeping the title row if there are at least two
table rows on the previous / next page.
10.19. If the table exceeds 2/3 (two third) of a page it should be placed in the appendix.

FIGURES
10.20. Any type of illustration – chart, diagram, cartogram or its fragment, drawing,
photograph etc. – shall be considered a figure.
10.21. Each figure shall be given a number and heading. Figure numbers shall be in
ascending order using Arabic numerals from the beginning of the Paper or the
beginning of a chapter. If there is only one figure in the Paper, it shall not be
numbered.
10.22. The size of the letters and numbers in the figure heading is 1 ptsmaller (10pt - Arial
or 11 pt - TimesNewRoman) with a line spacing of 1 (single spaced line spacing).
10.23. Figures shall be centred.
10.24. Figure numbers with the word Figure is written in bold, in one line with the title of
the image, horizontally cantered and placed below the image.

10.26. A figure shall be placed in the Paper immediately after its first mention in the text or
as close as possible to it.
10.27. Figures shall be placed so that they are easily visible and the direction of the text in
case of large texts shall be with a 90 rotation to the right.

10.28. The illustrative materials shown in the figure should be explained by text that
facilitates its understanding and furthers the perception of the material reviewed in
the Paper. The figure shall correspond to the text and shall append it harmoniously.
Figures shall not repeat information shown in tables.

FORMULAS
10.29. Quantitative and qualitative statements that are symbolically precise and concise are
shown as formulas. Formulas in the Papershould be written on a separate line in the
middle, horizontally centred using special programmes such as Equation or
others. Formulas are followed by a comma.
10.30. Formulas shall be given numbers in ascending order using Arabic numerals from the
beginning of the Paper or the beginning of a chapter. The numbers are in round
brackets opposite the formula aligned to the right margin. When formulas are
numbered the numbers are not followed by a full stop.
10.31. If the formula is on several lines then the number shall be written on the last line.
The explanations of each element/symbol of the formula are written on a new line
with 1.25 cm indent from the right margin.
10.32. The measurement units in the formula shall be written after their names or numerical
expression in the text and the explanation of the formula indicators should be written
in successive lines below the formula.
10.33. Sample of formulas:

10.34. Formulas in the Paper should be placed immediately after the first reference to it in
the text or as close as possible to it.
10.35. References in the text to the formula must be made by using the formula number in
round brackets. For example: „Working capital is an important financial indicator
which can be calculated according to formula (1)” or „Using formula (2) we can
calculate…”.
11. REFERENCES TO LITERATURE AND TEXT ELEMENTS
11.1. All citations, references and concrete information (figures, statements, conclusions
etc.) used in the Paper that are not formulated or calculated by the author shall be
followed by a reference to the relevant source.
11.2. If the paragraph contains only a citation or narration of the text by one author there
must be at least one reference after the paragraph. If a paragraph contains citations or
paraphrased text from several authors, the reference should be placed after the text of
each author.
11.3. When quoting the text of other authors or documents, the citation must be enclosed in
quotation marks and the reference must indicate the source and page (if such a source
is identifiable) of the original source.
11.4. If the text has been only paraphrased then quotation marks need not be used and
reference should indicate the source and the page of the original source so as to
distinguish it from the author’s own opinions.
11.5. References should be placed in the text as follows:
11.5.1. For UVF, STF, IT department students - in brackets after the text (at the end of the
sentence or paragraph) indicating the author of the source (without initials), year of
publication and page number (for legal enactments - name of the enactment, date of
adoption and clause); You can use the MS Word Citation & Bibliography tool to
create references, specifying the APA Sixth Edition style;
11.5.2. For JF students, footnotes on each page refer to the authors in the work as in the list of
literature and sources used, indicating at the end of the reference the specific page (for
a legal act - the specific article, etc.) or the exact Internet address from which
information is obtained.
11.6. If a source is used on one page of the Paper several times in a row, then in the
reference, starting from the second time, write "Ibid", indicating the page or article of
the relevant citation.
11.7. For samples of references refer to appendix 5.
11.8. When referring to text elements, the words "expression", "formula", "relation", "fig."
or "figure", "tab." or "table" and element number shall be used. E.g.: Tab. 2
demonstrates…, Fig. 5 shows…, … in accordance with Formula (7) … etc.
11.9. When referring to text elements, the words "expression", "formula", "relation", "fig."
or "figure", "tab." or "table" and element number shall be used. E.g.: Tab. 2
demonstrates…, Fig. 5 shows…, … in accordance with Formula (7) … etc.
11.10. If a sample of the precise layout for references is not provided in theses regulations,
students have the right to interpret the regulations at their discretion and formulate a
logically understandable reference or ask their advisor.

LIST OF LITERATURE AND SOURCES USED


12.

12.1. The sources and literature used in the Paper, to which references are given, should be
included in the list of literature and sources used. The list of literature and sources
shall be compiled in alphabetical order. First of all the literature is listed according to
the Latin alphabet irrespective of the language. This shall be followed by literature or
sources in Cyrillic or any other alphabet. The whole list should be numbered
consequently irrespective of the alphabet.
12.2. Unpublished sources used in the work (for example, research, interview or survey
materials, action plans developed by working groups, internal documentation of
institutions, etc.) should be written at the end of the list of literature and sources
used and separated by the heading “Unpublished materials”.
12.3. JF students shall divide the list of used literature and other sources into four groups:
12.3.1. literature,
12.3.2. international, EU, national legislative enactments,
12.3.3. court practice, case law,
12.3.4. practice materials.
12.4. The source must be indicated in the language in which the student has used it and its
translation in the language of the Papershall be given in square brackets except for
sources in English or Latvian.
12.5. Refer to Appendix 6 for a sample of the list of literature and sources.

13.FORMAT OF APPENDICES
13.1. The Appendices shall contain calculation methodology, auxiliary tables, tables of
standards, various visual aids and other reference and explanatory materials that may
facilitate the understanding of the content of the Paper and foster the proper
assessment of the author’s effort.
13.2. Large materials shall be folded to A4 format causing, however, no obstacle for
binding. The left hand margin shall be retained for binding; the folds shall be no
nearer to the remaining three sides than 5 mm to prevent them from being cut. After
folding and binding, the right side of the top of the page must still be clearly visible.
13.3. Materials enclosed in the Appendices must be numbered at the top right corner using
Arabic numerals in ascending order in (italics)Times New Roman 12 pt. or Arial 11
pt., e.g.: Appendix 1.
13.4. The title of the Appendix shall be indicated in bold Times New Roman, 12 pt.
or Arial, 11 pt. in the right corner below the number with a line spacing of 1 line. The
title of the Appendix must be displayed in such a manner that it can be read after the
folding of sheet.
13.5. The tables in the appendices, if they exceed the page size, should be subdivided as far
as possible and, starting with the second page of the appendix, the pages should be
numbered as a continuation of the annex, indicating "Appendix 1, continuation 2" in
the upper right-hand corner, etc. Row and column headings should be retained in the
table extensions.
13.6. It should be taken into consideration that only materials (or parts) directly related to
the research may be attached as appendices and materials that were collected but have
no bearing on the research may not be attached.

14. SUBMISSION OF THE PAPER


14.1. Qualification papers, academic and professional bachelor theses and master
theses shall be submitted electronically by uploading them to the BATIS system in
pdf format.
14.3. Other independent Papers are uploaded on the BATIS system, unless the
lecturer has indicated otherwise.

The list of legal enactments shall be listed as follows:


• Legal enactments that are in force in a hierarchical order (Constitution, international
agreements, laws, MK regulations etc.), further grouping them by chronological order;
• Legal enactments that have ceased to be in force indicating them by order of official
publication;
• Foreign legal enactments, firstly according to the country then hierarchically and
chronologically;

The list of case law (judicial) documents shall be listed as follows:


• Decisions of the Latvian courts,
• Decisions of the EU courts,
• Decisions of International courts,
• Decisions of Foreign courts;

All sources that cannot be grouped in the previous sections - literature, legal acts or
case law are included in the section Practice materials.

Drafts of legal enactments, various conceptual plans, programmes and commentaries


on legal enactments are not legal enactments and shall be included in the list of
literature if they had been published as separate publications or in the list of Practice
materials if they were from drafts worked out by working committees or during
seminars etc.
