Pragmatic analysis is to analyze signs/symbols within the context. The context here that we’ll be
analyzing is the satelite mapping of Bandung. The icon in this context are consists of the legend on map.
From the Gedung Sate shape to signify the Gedung Sate building, the Toga Hat icon that signify
university, stop signs that signify stoppage and the H word to signify Hospital etc. The symbol in this
context consist of the color orange and green on the road displayed as green means the road has little
traffic while red means it’s the other way around. The color that represent the icons also have meanings
behind it as the color green is used on icons indicating nature-friendly public places like Lembang Park &
Zoo and Gelora Bandung Lautan Api Stadium as people tend to perceive the color green as the color of
nature. The indices in this context are also the use of color for the icons. The color grey is used for non-
commercial area, the color green used for nature-friendly/vegetarian area, the color red for hospital, the
color blue for commercial area and the lightgreen color used for reservation area. A non-commercial area
received the color blue because well, it’s a commercial area. It can’t received the color green as it’s
reserved for the reservation area. The causal of this is because of the agreement upon the use of color to
differentiate the icons. The road color causality also happens because of the traffic in the area. If maybe
the red road doesn’t have that much traffic, it may change to green and if a green road is in a heavy
traffic, it may also change to red.
