EEN-206: Tutorial-2

Q1. A single-phase line has two parallel conductors 1 meter apart. The diameter of
each conductor is 1.4 cm.
(a) Calculate the external inductance per km of the line.
(b) Calculate the loop inductance per km of the line.
(c) Calculate the loop inductance per km if the diameter of one conductor is doubled.

Q2. Calculate the loop inductance and reactance per kilometre of a single-phase line
comprising two parallel conductors one meter apart and 1 cm in diameter when the material
of the conductor is 1) Copper and 2) Steel with relative permeability 50.

Q3. A single-phase line operates at 50 Hz. The diameter of each conductor is 20mm and the
distance between the conductors is 3 m. Calculate the following:

a) Inductance of each conductor per km.

b) Loop inductance of the line per km.
c) Total inductive reactance of the line per km

Q4. A transmission line cable of length 3 km consists of 19 strands of identical copper

conductors each 1.5 mm in diameter. Because of the twist of the strands, the actual length of
each conductor is increased by 5%. Determine the resistance of the cable, if the resistivity of
copper is 1.72 µΩ-cm at 20 ◦ C.

Q5. A sample of copper wire has a resistance of 50 ohm and α=0.00409/ ◦ C. Find the max
operating temperature of the wire if the resistance is to be increased by at most 10%.

Q6. Find the loop inductance and reactance per kilometer of single-phase overhead line
consisting of two conductors, each 1.213 cm diameter. The spacing between conductors is
1.25 meters and the frequency is 50 Hertz.
Q7. Consider a long, two-wire line composed of solid round conductors. The diameter of
both conductors is 0.5 cm and the distance between their centers is 1 m. If the distance is
doubled, then the inductance per unit length will be?

Q8. A wire of 4 mm in diameter is suspended at a constant height of 10 m above the sea level
which constitutes the return conductor. Calculate the inductance of the wire per km when the
material of the conductor is:
(a) Copper
(b) Steel with relative permeability of 100
