1. DESCRIPTION
1.2 CONSTRUCTION
The axle 472.72 is constructed with a main reducer with hypoid crown wheel and pinion, two wheel
reducers, service brakes at the wheels and parking brake at the input (if requested). The steering
mechanism is actuated by a hydraulic cylinder through pins and bronze bushings.
The structure of the axle is an integrated casting made out of nodular cast iron with provision of points
of attachment to the vehicle’s frame.
The hypoid crown wheel and pinion is mounted within the differental housing made out of nodular
cast iron.
The traction torque is transmitted to the wheels through a planetary gear arrangement of 3 satellites,
a floating crown and a main planetary.
The drum brakes are type “simplex 400x80” controlled with a hydraulic cylinder using mineral
hydraulic oil.
1.7 STEERING
The steering is performed with different angles at each wheel and it is actuated by a double-acting
hydraulic cylinder. The units are shipped with the wheels set in parallel.
1.8 LUBRICATION
The lubrication at the main assembly and wheel assemblies is splash type. The axle has provision of
grease fittings at various point.
2. INITIAL OPERATION
The units are shipped without oil or grease. Before the intitial start-up it is necessary to: a) Fill the
main axle beam with oil through the oil fill plug up to the oil level plug located at the side of the beam.
Use only clean oil that complies with the specifications in “point 3” or equivalent.
4. MAINTENANCE
The oil must be changed after the initial 100 hours of operation.
We recommend that successive oil changes are performed every 500-1000 hours or 1 year whichever
comes first.
It is recommended to perform the oil change when warm. The oil can be drained through the
provided drain plug at the bottom of the housing.
Important:
Use protective equipment during this process and when handling hot oil. AVOID INJURIES!
Disposal of old oil must be done following your local, state, and federal regulations.
DO NOT POLLUTE THE ENVIRONMENT!
Periodically check the harware around the assembly. Re-torque if required following the torque
specifications shown in the table “A” below.
Table “A”:
LOCKING TORQUE
SCREW POSITION GRADE
(Nm)
M18 D.38 12.9 488 ± 49
M16 A.19 – C.31 – C.32 12.9 353 ± 36
M16 A.21 – A.20 10.9 294 ± 30
M8 C.8 10.9 35 ± 3,5
M14 D.1 8.8 138 ± 14
M22x1,5 C.26 K10 650 ± 60
When re-assembling the sump and covers, always use liquid gasket (Loctite® Forma Gasket).
The movement (play) of the bearings (pos. A.6 - A.14) is achieved by adjusting the rotational
torque of the pinion through tightening the locking nut (pos.A.1) between 3 and 6 Nm without
the oil seal installed. After mounting the conical crown and setting the bearings (pos.A.16),
measure the rotational torque at the locking nut (pos. A.1) which it should be between 4.5 and
7.5 Nm. For the setting of the bearings (pos. A.6 - A.14) use spacer shims (pos. A.7 - A.8 - A.9)
and for the bearings (pos. A.16) use the locking nuts (pos. A.18).
When ordering replacement parts, always provide the axle serial number. Normally, the crown
wheel and pinions sent as replacement parts are at a predetermined dimension of 148 mm
between the bottom of the pinion head and the center of the differential. The setting of the
contact and back-lash between the teeth (0.1 – 0.2 mm) is achieved through the lateral locking
nuts (pos. A.18).
Spacer shims are not provided for the fixed dimension of 148 mm between the between
the bottom of the pinion head and the center of the differential.
The bearings of the wheel hub are set through locking nut (pos. C.20) to approximately 500-700
Nm, while turning the hub (pos. C.26) and slightly hitting it with a nylon head hammer. Loosen
the locking nut slightly until the hub turns at 15-20 Nm or 8.5 – 11.5 Kg. Following by locking it
with set screw (pos. C.17) using Loctite®242.
The brakes are provided with a cam adjustment that can be set from the outside witha wrench.
For the eventually replacment of the brake pads, it is necessary to disassemble the wheel
assembly and removing the reducer and wheel hub.
For the replacement of the dual shaft joint, it is necessary to disassemble the wheel reducer,
wheel hub, brake and stub axle. The joint is removed without disassembling the external
universal joint.
For the disassembling of the complete sump, it is necessary to follow the previous point and
removing the steering cylinder.
For the replacement of the seal rings and shaft bushings it is necessary to follow point 4.4.5, in
addition to removing of the M12 screws (pos. B.7) at each side of the beam and sliding the
bushing support at the inside of the beam.
The 4 steering pins are mounted tight to the beam. The sliding bushings are mounted tight to
the half joint of the external universal joints
In the event of replacing the sliding bushings and shims, it is necessary to slide the 60 mm ø
joint pin. The removal should be made using a puller attached to the M20 threads at each pin.
The re-assembling of these pins could be made easier by heating the housing / bearing areas of
the beam to approximate 100°C and cooling the pins. With a portable press or drift pins and
hammer, install the pims. It is reccomended to lubricate the pins before installation.
